So I was down at the NRA Atlanta show this past weekend and the Smith and Wesson booth had the 586 L-Comp there and they were calling it a "new" gun for this year. They have had this model before, what makes it "new"? When was it produced before? Thanks in advance!

If was the 3-inch -7 with PowerPort, product code 170170, those have been in continuous production since at least 2010. Would be a stretch to call it "new".

Maybe they did something minor, like put a white outline rear sight on it, and gave it a new sku #, so they could call it "new".

That is very possible. I'm also thinking they didn't make it for a couple of years and then re-introduced it this year???

Maybe they meant it was new, not a used gun.

All of the guns were new and were factory models with the firing pins removed so you could dry fire them and get a good feel for the gun. The models that were new for this year were specifically labeled as such, including the 586 L-comp.

The NEW reference is to the L-comp no longer a Distributor Exclusive firearm. It is a Smith and Wesson cataloged product as of this year.

Same cloths, different bus....
Doesn't make it a new gun, IMO.....

Went through this last year when it was a special, aka "new" product, just from a different distributor...

The model isn't new... it's just recycled thru another selling channel/medium...

If this is the best S&W can do for "new" models, then....... Oh well................ :(

I haven't seen one with a 2017 ship date, yet, but I saw them last year with 2016 dates, and the intervening years between then and 2010.

It's a very cool revolver. Would love to add one of the older -6's to my small collection.

Thanks to all for the info. I've got a recent prior 586L-Comp (don't remember the sku, but I think it was through one of the major distributors). I've read S&W's current webpage on the new/current offering: PERFORMANCE CENTER(R) 586 L-Comp | Smith & Wesson

What I don't see mentioned which differs from mine are:
-moon-clip capable and supplied with a few; and
-an extra Hogue rubber grip to go along with the wood grips.
(speedloader shown in my photos is an HKS-brand I later bought for carry.)

New 586 L Comp picked up today

So, new guy posting some observations on this new acquisition:

- Should the trigger and hammer have a better bluing job (very splotchy)?
- Cylinder opens like my grandfather's garage door
- Dry as a bone right out of the box

I have not had time to clean and run some snap caps through it for function. The trigger job does not seem that stellar ... maybe it is just me and I am spoiled by my own trigger jobs.

Thoughts?

NOTE: Yes, I have been quite the lurker due to the fact I am not a big revolver guy.

I bought mine about four years ago. It was also very dry. I pulled the side plate, sprayed brake cleaner to remove crud and any left over metal shavings, smoothed the rebound slide and frame a titch, installed a 14# rebound slide spring, and dry lubed. Perfect.
A coworker bought one last year. That gun had a heavy trigger and you could actually feel and hear the grittness. That gun went back the same day. Came back three weeks later perfect.
Now, both guns are superlative performers but at their price level, they should have been perfect from the factory the first time.

For Post#12, the tritium front sight was already being used on my 2016 586L-Comp. From Post#2, a tritium front sight was being used in 2000.

Further on the front night-sight, however. The vial is deeply inset into the front sight and not very bright. In the daytime, instead of seeing a vial, it's so inset, I saw only a dark hole. I've since replaced my front sight with an SDM brand gold-colored bead type.

Thanks for the information on the case coloring Kernel ... I would have never guessed it (sure looked like a bad blue job). I will post a picture(s) of this later after work. I also will take suggestion on cleaning and lubing the firearm by removing the side plate.
