Why no love for the 586? I see so many 686 threads but very few on the 586. There must be some folks the have a 586 some where in the safe.

I have a couple 586s....... a 6" no dash, a 4"-2 and a 4" factory round butt -4.... unfortunately they are all anib...... so if I grab an L frame to take to the range of afield....... LOL it's a stainless 686 or 681.

My 586 no-dash is my favorite gun.

There is a lot of attention on the ugly stainless 686, but those of us that know better prefer the superior beauty of blue steel because stainless guns are all ugly. :D :D :D :D

I used to have a 686 (the price was too good to pass it up), but I sold it and bought something else with the money.

I'll never sell my 586.

The 4th picture was the set of no-dash "twins" that I had before I sold the 686.

Here is my 586 no-dash. A long cool woman in a black dress, I call her Black Beauty.

What's not to love?

Both 586 and 686 are great. I have a -3 586 in 4 and 6 inch. Also a -4, 4 inch 686. To me, blued guns have the edge when it comes to beauty. I am just glad I can afford both and do not have to choose.

I don't particularly like them. I have an as new no dash 4" nickel 586. Bought it when they were first announced. Shot it some and put it away and went back to my 19 & 28. I don't cotton to full lug barrels........Wasted steel.......a python wantabe...........The only 2 L's I enjoy are a 696 and a 686 mtn gun.

I would disagree about the wasted steel part. It does add weight and help reduce recoil. Some people do not like heavy barrels or may not like the looks of it but I do not see it as wasted steel. But that said, here is my 586 no dash:

I love my 586s. About the only reason 686s might be discussed more is that they have made a lot more of them so there are a lot more 686 owners to give love! Both are great, even if they are "Python wannabes"... Here's mine:

I love my Brazil contract 586. It has become my IDPA SSR gun. I have had the front sight changed to a FO mounted on a Weigand DX base. Mounted an LPA rear sight. Did some judicious stoning and installed a RP main spring and 14# rebound.

There are always likely to be anomalies with various models. The SCSW talks about the Brazil contract 586 models that were chambered in .38 Spl. These were 586-5 guns that date from 1993. These all had a BPY serial prefix.

What the SCSW does not mention is that there was another Brazil contract order of 586's that dated from 1997. These all had a CCE serial prefix but these were all stamped as 586-4's and they had MIM triggers (and probably cylinder releases, but it's hard to tell). These were all the old frame design and had the FP on the hammer.

The 586-5 Brazil guns were boxed in the one-piece (flip type lid) blue cardboard boxes. The 586-4 Brazil guns were shipped in the blue palstic boxes.

With S&W there are always exceptions.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Tell me a little about those grips. Is your 586 a no dash and are those stock? I'm not sure I've seen that rounded/square butt exactly like those before; almost looks like J-frame square butts. I've recently gotten interested in a 586, and if I get one, it's going to look EXACTLY (well, almost anyway) like yours! :D

That 586 was a no dash, sent back for the M, S&W swapped the tubes and gave it blast blue finish with all new screws. Those are the original Targets that dated to the right period. Bubba got his paws on the gun, he rounded every edge rounded every edge on the stocks, don't even get me started on the super comp trigger job. :) I tried to emulate J Target grips when I took bubba's round over a few steps further.

I love blued guns like the 586. Picked up a 586 no dash last year and most recently a 586 with the 4 position adjystable front sight. Both are 6 inchs. I really want a 4 inch in great shape but a shooter not a collector gun so box etc not all that Inportant to me but perfect bluing is. You don't see many S&W's around here anyway. I looked at the gunshow yesterday and don't remember seeing any 586 or at least any that caught my eye that I would own.
Will keep searching.
