586 M stamp question

I know there was a recall/modification for 586 no dashes and 586-1's.

Could someone please remind me: What was the reason? If I bought a used one of these without the modification, would S&W modify it on their dime?

Here is some info from Firearm Recalls and Safety Warnings- FirearmsID.com on the issue and the modification.

You can check if your revolver includes this improvement by looking at the left side of the frame when the cylinder is fully open. If your revolver has been stamped either with a "2" or higher number after the basic three-digit model number or with an "M" above the model number, your revolver includes this improvement and does not need modification. If your revolver bears the model number 581, 586, 681, 686, or 581-1, 586-1, 681-1, 686-1, 686CS-1 without an "M" over the model number, it does not include this improvement and your should have your revolver modified.

Not sure if they would cover the shipping for this, but it is always worth asking.
 
Yes, S&W still honors the recall. Contact Customer Service and they should send you a shipping label. The recall was for the Hammer Nose (firing pin) and Hammer Nose Bushing. The hole in the bushing was over size, and allowed primer material to flow back into the bushing hole and it would extend out and drag on the recoil shield and at times tie the revolver up. This primarily only happened with HOT Plus P loads. Many owners have never had a problem, and if your gun was used much it may not be a problem. Try a couple cylinderfull's of +P 125 grain and see what happens. If it doesn't cause a problem don't worry about it.
 
MY 686 never had a problem with .38, +P or otherwise, but it sure did lock up with Federal .357 Mag. The recall cured it and I've shot it for 25 years since with zero problems.
 
I have a 586-0 which I have used with 38 Special ammo for many years and have not experienced any issues.

The issue was with certain types of Federal .357 Magnum ammo. The primers were the issue.

Using .38 Special ammo in your 586 wouldn't cause any issues.
