586 no dash $1800 USD, huh??

Sometimes I go and look at the buyer's feedback to see what other kinds of thing they buy and the prices they paid. The winner of this auction recently paid $2700 and change for a NIB 686....

You overlooked the fact that was a 3 inch 686 prelock and only couple hundred made. A No dash 586 is not even in same league. I stopped trying to figure out why some fairly common ones bring insane prices sometimes... This one only had half the label and no way to know if it was even the original since serial number portion is gone. Like 850 tops in my eyes. Someone wanted it bad though.

Its a no dash, no "M". Meaning its a first run gun that has not been back to the factory for the recall. To some folks, this makes it special.
I have one just like it that I bought when they first came out in 1981. Mine had issues and went back to the factory twice to get it to shoot straight. But it never had the recall done. So there's no "M". It shoots so good now and hasn't given me any problems, so I have no plans to ever have the recall done. ;)

I could see if it was a 2.5 inch gun since those are rarer then hens teeth. I have never seen one in the wild, but that was a good day for the seller. SCSW doesn't even mention the 2.5 but has one pictured with combats. I know there are forum members who own them. Yes, I am jealous !

Nice price! I wonder what I could get for a 1982 no dash, no M Nickle that might be in better condition. Still has the inspection stickers on the stocks. If you have the original stocks one should have the date on it.
Some say the avg 586 is a tad more accurate then a avg 686. Why? Because SS was a little more difficult for S&W to machine in the eighties than steel.

Times have changed though, now there are better machining techniques and tooling but sloppy machinists many of whom don't know how to write or edit a program.

I still have a pair of "no-dash" 586's, both 4" barrels. Wonderful revolvers. I'd rather shoot them than my Python. Substantially better triggers.
Paid $350 for the first one, $450 for the second. Both have "M" stamped under the serial numbers. Doesn't matter to me.

Also have a "Model of 1950 Pre-27", 3-7/16" barrel. Wear at muzzle, sides of barrel, ejector shroud and on cylinder suggest it was carried quite a bit. Side screws look perfect. Checkering is perfect. Mechanically perfect with a shiny bore. Letters to 1/11/1952. $300.

The prices listed here stun me, about the way Python prices did starting a few years ago.
I'm not a collector. If I can't shoot it I don't want it, with a couple exceptions. Frankly, I think Pythons are a liability. I used to carry them but now worry about losing them to evidence collection I ever have to use them.

NOW I worry about carrying my 586's for the same reason.

Let's start a rumor that the Model 19 is a seriously flawed gun that rusts away at the mere mention of the word. That way maybe I can continue to carry them.Pythons reduced size.jpg

The way it was explained to me by Sevens is this . Two people could have the exact same gun . If the one guy is a newbie , few or no feedback , and the other is a well known with feedback and plenty of sales , it's a lost cause . The purist is going with the guy with a proven track record , no matter the price . It's not a perfect system , but going with a known entity is worth it to some . Makes me wonder what my LNIB 586 Silhouette would go for in the right hands .......

I like my 586 and I admit it doesn't have original stocks on it and it isn't for sale but I'd sure think about that if someone wants to pony up 1800 dollars for it!

Well, the "boys" have a new one up. #46 first run with box. This sample is for sure ASNIB. Popcorn is ready for the final show down.
:p

Looks like that on went for $2000. I was following that one just to see.
