586 no dash year of mfg?

I have the S&W book with S/Ns but all I know for sure it's 1981-1985. S/N is AUN5xxx, can some one narrow the year for me? Thx

Using the Extrapolation/WAG method probably Q3 or Q4 of 1986.

1986 is a -1 mine has no dash.

bigi - I don't have a ser. # chart to go by, but my 1st. year production 586 is number AAE10**, if that helps.

That doesn't mean that on January 1, 1987 they changed from a no dash to a -1.

Prefix AHC is the only one shown for 1986 and that was in January. The first prefix shown for 1987 is AVB in July. Therefore, by extrapolation, your gun would fall in between those dates. Being as they did change to the -1 in 1986 we can rule out Jan to Jul of 1987. Seeing as how the second letter of your prefix falls late in the alphabet, it would probably be late in the year - as I said Q3 or Q4 of 1986.

The "WAG" part of it is that S&W didn't always use serial numbers in sequential order. If you have the original box you can look at the SO number, which is the Julian date of when it was packaged to ship.
