Seven shots are ok with me, but I wish I could order one without the two holes.
The one on the frame, above the cylinder release, and the one on the barrel, in front of the sight.
As said above, the port just increases flash with plus pee ammo, and even light magnum, like the Speer SB magnum. This would be the stoutest ammo that I would use on a revolver of this size.
Sight radius is also reduced slightly. Not a useful tradeoff in my opinion.
It might be interesting if Smith made a medium frame Centennial type DA only PC model for carry.

Best,
Rick

I just wonder why on a fairly high end revolver S&W uses a blackened finish and not their excellent blued finish.

I have a 686 with the blackened finish. It is not a LComp. Was told the batch it came from was sold to a South American country that wanted stainless but no shiny. I have no holster wear.

I really like the Model 627 that they make. To me its the nicest looking 7 shooter 357 gun they make. I also wish the price was lower on it as well. Having had the pleasure of firing one once the balance was virtually perfect with it.

Check those chambers in the Model 627, Barrie. The last one I saw was an 8-shooter. I don't have a 627, but I do have a couple of the Scandium/Titanium 327s, and they're 8-shooters. The all steel Model 627 is much more pleasant to shoot, though. I have the standard, 6-shot Model 27s, and carried the 3 1/2-inch and 5-inch models for years as a cop in GA. Great guns, for sure.
I also have a couple of 586-3s that were listed as having "Midnight Black" finish (which looks a lot like the 586 comp pictured above), and I carried them in the silicone-lined Safariland holsters. They don't show any significant holster wear, and I've carried them quite a bit. Unfortunately, I didn't know how limited the production was (they're both 4-inch, six-shooters), and I had Jim Stroh with Alpha Precision convert one to .41 Special.
Best wishes from Montana

On the plus side the 7 round cylinder stop notches are cut just aft of the flutes making it a stronger design where the 6 shot stop notches are cut above the cylinder bores .

Also my guess is if you still prefer 6 rounds the stronger 7 shot L frame with one empty chamber probably weighs about the same as the 6 shot (perhaps even less as the cylinder has a big hole that isnt filled ?) ...
This would have the same result of 6 bangs and a click.

After enjoying all the above photos of various L Comps my only hope is that S&W will make another run of the 686 version.

What are those beautiful grips on your stainless gun?

No the runs are small. However the 586 L-comp has been in continuous production for 15 years now. So that is quite a few small runs.

The first run in 2000 was only 200 revolvers. Mine is the last one from that first run and it still looks great

What kind of holster was this guy using, was it lined or unlined?

True stainless has no finish to wear off, but holster wear is largely a cause of what you are holstering it in.

If you want the stainless version just buy one of those version.

Where can I get some?

NOT a GOOD BUY!

Smith & Wesson must have made a large run of these 3" 586s because I see them in a lot of shops lately. With the 3" compensated barrel and short grip it feels great in hand. What I don't like though is the finish, it's blackened and not traditional S&W bluing. Spoke to a gentleman who bought one and he said the finish started to wear immediately when he wore it in a leather holster. He said it shoots great but looks like **** and wished it was brushed stainless steel. I was tempted to buy one but that finish changed my mind. Any forum members buy one yet?
YEP they made a run (not a big one at that stupid cost) of they and marked they PC marked and you and I know they don't do nothing but RUN the PRICE WAY UP 4 out of the last 5 PC guns I bought had to be sent back and they are in the $900ish wholesale. john

My favorite...

is my 7-shot Model 586 L-Comp. It has a beautiful matte blued finish. The Spegel grips contrast nicely.

But my six-shot Model 19 K-Comp is a very close second.

Slightly OT, but what are your thoughts on the Spegel grips?
From your pictures, I take it your grips are the extended-boot grip?
You wouldn't have a picture showing the backstap and grip thickness by chance...
I called Craig Spegel a few weeks ago to get on his list for 2 sets of K and N frame ex-boot grips. 5 month wait.

Thanks!

Those are the grips the factory shipped with it. I have no idea what wood they are made of, but I like them

I don't see any way to believe that those are factory grips. If anything, they look like something Roy Fishpaw would make.

Well you can choose to believe :) or call me a liar. :(

I highly recommend the former. :D

If you search the forum, there are several other F-comps pictured with the same grips. Their owners also claim that the revolvers shipped from the factory with them.

MrTrolleyGuy's are more reddish than mine, but clearly the same grip

If you own a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson (3rd edition) you will notice that the F-comp on the back jacket is also wearing the same grips with a little darker color than mine

This is the best I can do with what I've got on file. Checkered extended Spegel Boot Grips are the best grip for any RB S&W. Superbly comfortable and absorb recoil very, very well.

Thank you cprher for the picture.
I believe the Spegel grips will be worth the wait. I'm looking for a thicker grip across the back strap and a palm swell that my Ahrend banana grips are lacking.

Not knocking the Ahrends, but I want something a little different.

Thanks again. :)
