Essentially the 586 is a blued 686... others can tell you more history. My 586 is gorgeous and I have no complaints. My 581 is an ugly beast but gets her done...

Something I recently discovered are the 581 and 681 Models which are fixed sight L frames.

Yes the 586 is the blue version of the stainless 686 unless you get a nickel 586 like the 4 inch barrel one I had. Sold it and still regret it.

Mine is also a 4 inch. I think it's one of those guns that once you hold it you think, "this is how a revolver is supposed to feel. Not to heavy, not to light...just right".

Off topic, but please dear sir, take back your comments about the model 581!!!!! It is a fine side arm!!! (wink).

My 586 has the 6" barrel and is a ton of fun at the range. More accurate than I am, but I'm trying! The Ahrends Retro Combats should be here any day now. :D

Sold a 4" 686 to get a 4" 586 last year.

Same gun, different metal.

Over the years I've had a 2.5" 686, a 6" 586, and the two mentioned above.

IMO, the 4" balances the best.

Here is a quick summary form replies to a recent thread of mine.

A M27 is the large frame .357
The 586 (blued) and 686 (ss) is the medium frame and full lug .357
Then there is one more that is the small frame.

I have a 686, and I agree the 586 is a very good looking gun. I have a soft spot for a good blued gun. I had a 28, 29, 15, and a 10 (4 Screw) before I got my first Stainless, a 67. I have always liked blued guns.

I had a 586 4" DAO at one time, and like an idiot traded it off. Wish I had it back now.

My local gun shop has a 4" 586 No Dash Nickel on the shelf. It is a good looking gun. If it were a Blue one, I would have probably started adoption proceedings by now.

Mine is definately more accurate than I can shoot it. I love its balance (it's a 6".) Arguably the finest production .357 to come down the pike.

The 586 and 686 are the quintessential smith to own if you enjoy shooting. My 6" and 8" are extremely accurate, a joy to shoot and can bust bowling pins with ease at 50 years and if you do your part can reach out to 100 with the factory iron sights and a 148gr hbwc.

My 4" 586 no dash and 6" 686 no dash and then along with the 6" 617 no dash.

3 of the nicest revolvers that I have ever shot. Th e686 has the nicest trigger but the 586 is not very far behind at all.

Here's my Nickel 586, four inch

Like they said, it just feels right. Slightly beefier than the K frame .357's, plus the full lug under the barrel gives it a bit more inertia to resist muzzle flip. Like BobR1 said; I like the blued ones better, but this one presented itself in the shop, and I could not pass her up. I like the light wood against the shiny nickel. Neat.
