I'm thinking of trading for a 586. Were they subject to the 686 recall? Anything to watch out for?

They're fine examples. The no dash and -1's were subject to recall, which may, or may not be required on every "no" or "1" dash gun.

Yes they had the recall, you can just google it. I don't think it is that big of a deal. S&W will pay for it, some people had it done and others didn't. If it has the letter M stamped in the crane then it was already done. Just google 586 recall and you can read all about it. If it is a good deal, i wouldn't stop me from buying it. Call S&W and give them the serial# and they will let you know for sure.

If I remember correctly I believe the problem showed up with Federal 357 Magnum ammo. Soft primers being most of the issue.
I have never sent my 686 back in for the Modification.

They do have a problem. They are hungry, and eat lots of 38 Special ammo. You may need a Dillon 550 to feed it.
