In 1978 I lost a 59 in a burglary. It was as new, in the box, all papers, spare mag, the whole package.

Lately I've been thinking about getting another for purely recreational/sentimental reasons. I would like to get one of a similar vintage and condition. What should I expect to pay?

This would not be used for anything more than a range gun.

At the time I thought they were a pretty cool gun, admittedly I was just a "baby" gun owner and just beginning my true firearms education.

I was living in Tucson at the time. Would there still be a record of the burglary (reported to TPD, came out, dusted for prints, full report)?

If you look on any of the gun auctions sites, you'll see prices from $350-$550..depending on condition, papers, box, etc...

I owned one but just could not get use to the grip..always seemed like I was trying to get my hand around the grips..I don't have overly large hands so that may have something to do with my issue with the 59...but as far as it shot, never had a problem with it...just didn't feel as good as say the model 39...

As for the police report, you may want to call the PD..and ask them how far back their archive files go but I would think there would still be a record of the theft...particularly since it involved a firearm.

I had a pistol stolen from my home. I reported it to the police dept. 13 years later they called me to tell me they recovered the pistol. So they keep the info in the archives for several years.

If you want it purely for sentimental reason, go for the 59. The third generation guns had extractor and safety improvements and are known to feed any type of ammo. The 590X series grip felt a lot better to me than the old 59. For nostalgia I would get the 59. If I intended to shoot and carry, I would go for the 590X series.

Had a 59 for awhile..just never liked the way it gripped...shot fine, never any problems that I remember...

Thanks guys, not in a position now to get anything but I eventually will get a 59 for the purely sentimental reasons. The only use will be on the range for pure fun.

... and fun, it is, but you already know this! A few years back I saw an 'unloved' 59 in Gander Mountain, so I adopted it.
