Just field stripped my S & W 5904 and when reassembling it, the recoil spring and rod must have slipped off the barrel detent or something, as I slid the rail back on, because the rail is jammed---can't slide forward or back. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hopefully photo will be as attachment.

You need to take your thumb and push the levers down on the frame so the slide will come on back. There will be three levers, hope this helps.

Try twisting / wiggling the slide and then grab the slide and the frame firmly and give it a good tug. Maybe reposition your hand on the slide slightly and try twisting or wiggling again as you try pulling it off. If that doesn't work, maybe try tapping the rear of the slide with a rubber mallet.

Looks like the slide has to move forward first as its too close to the levers, if not touching, for the levers to be depressed.

DO NOT do that.

It looks lke you really have the rear of the slide jammed against the ejector lever and pushed it way out of position.

I'm thinking that you're going to need to remove the grip (which will be under tension from the compressed hammer main spring) to gain access to the hammer pin to drive it out to remove the ejector lever.

If you've never done anything on your pistol beyond field stripping it, don't attempt anything else and send it back to S&W service to have them fix it.
