Bought a NIB 5906 several months ago (CDNN)... GREAT GUN!!!
Was looking into getting a 'lighter' (alloy) version... What's the basic difference between the 5904 and the 3904?
Thanks

The 3904 can be thought of as a single stack version of the 5904. It was based on the 1st Generation S&W 39, and is the predecessor to the compact 3913/3914. The 5904 is a double stack like your 5906, and was based on the old 1st Generation S&W 59. Both feature an aluminum alloy frame with a carbon steel slide.

Another alloy framed version of the 5906 is the 5903. It's essentially the same as the 5904, but with a stainless slide with an anodized alloy frame.

There's also the 6906/6904 series of compact double stack 3rd Generation guns, which feature an alloy frame, but are shorter in both the grip and the barrel. They'll still accept your 5906 magazines, though.

Thanks ROGUE... appreciate the in-depth answer!
