Shot the first 120 rounds through my "U" marked 5906 that looked new only factory test fired. Was flawless. Looking the gun over latter I noticed the extractor pin sticking up. I went back and looked at my pictures of the pistol before I shot it and the pin was flush like it was supposed to be. What causes this do I need a new pin?

I was of the impression that when the pin is removed say for extractor replacement some day that it's driven from the top down and that the hole in the slide is more narrow at the top for a friction fit of the pin. Not sure how of why it could be working it's way up.

Going to the range today to put another 150 rounds through it and see if the pin moves.

After shooting it again the pin stayed in place.

That could be an indicator that someone drove out the tapered extractor pin in the wrong direction, now the hole is ever so slightly oversized and the pin can walk. That can be a real issue. S&W might be able to fix it, you might also want to contact BMCM, who is a member of these forums. He is a master when it comes to the S&W metal receiver pistols.

^^this explanation is almost certainly what happened to one of my 745 pistols. It's annoying and must have been done by a previous owner.

It's odd for the same situation on what seems to be a new-old-stock 5906.

Is there any chance that the hole is fine but the wrong diameter pin was used? That would be a more ideal situation than the top hole being too large a diameter.
