I have read that S&W improved the 3rd Gen pistols when they introduced the TSW series. So heres my question. I own a 5906 made in 2006(according the S&W). It is a non TSW series(no ugly rail) that I brought from CDNN. So now Im curious would this gun have all the TSW improvments seeing it was made after the TSW series came out???

I would have to say a qualified no, it would only have the TSW enhancements if it were indeed a TSW model. Someone else with more knowledge can answer and confirm this, but think that S&W only did the refining if it was designated a TSW model. Here is a link to explain the designation with what makes the TSW a different handgun(even if ever so slightly). BTW, I have a 4006TSW and it shoots as well as my M&P 9....zorro49

A 5906 made in 2006?? Must have been a special order contract because I thought they stopped producing the standard 5906 around 2001. In any event, I think Zorro49 is correct.

ted1:

I have purchased several 3rd gen. Smiths in the past few months and one of them was a NIB 5906 mfg 4/06. Also a 6906 (4/06), a 3913LS (2/08)and a CS9 (4/08). All were NIB and S&W Customer Service verified the mfg dates for me.

So, I don't know when the cut-off date is for the mfg of the 5906, but it had to have been later than April, 06.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

According to S&W and from what I read the 5906s CDNN have were a special order made for some agency in Puerto Rico. Im not sure how CDNN got the guns but they are NIB and according to S&W mine was made in early 2006.
I believe the TSW series has some refinements in them, along with the cosmetic two tone look, and tac rail.
Now I wonder if the newer series were made to the same specs as the TSW series, but without the rail. Without the rail it would not be considered "tactical", but I wonder if it would share the other enhancements of the TSW. It would be made on the same machines/gun tech etc...right??

CarbineKid, lock the slide back and post a picture of the barrel.

The barrel type is different on the models with the TSW enhancements.

The end of the barrel is different. I would think that the newer 5906's would have the accuracy improvements.

I must admit, I am surprised that they are still making a non-TSW named 5906 in 2006.

I have owned both an older 5906 and a newer 5906 TSW. In my opinion, the enhancements to the 5906 TSW make it a more accurate pistol.

I also own a 4513 TSW and it is surprisingly accurate. If I can ever find a 945-1 in a 3.75" barrel, I will sell the 4513 and a Springfield GI I have.

FWIW,
Just last year (10/26/2007 in Springfield, 2/2008 in Houlton, ME) I took the plant tours at Smith and Wesson and saw many different guns being machined that they do not offer anymore, both Revolver and Pistol.
In Springfield there were many, many CNC 5-axis milling machines working on the M&P slides to keep up with the demand.
But I also saw machining being done on the 5946 (Non-TSW), 3913 Lady Smith and the CS45 to name a few.
What a great time I had going through the different manufacturing production "Cells" given my background is in Aerospace machining.

Wow, I am surprised. Yours is the older style barrel before the TSW's were produced.

This, I believe, is the same barrel design as they have on the 910.

Interesting...

Thanks for the info. I am also surprised. I thought S&W would have upgraded the 5906 instead of going back to the old style. I still lvoe the gun, and its seems to be every bit as good as my 3913TSW.

Kid, looks like the barrel on both my 915 and my 5903. Both very nice shooters, BTW.

I have a 5906 that I need help with. I am looking for a Canadian legal barrel. Must be over the 105.1mm requirement. There were a couple of aftermarket barrels, BarSto and Briley but I can't find one anywhere. Can anybody lead me to one??
