Recently purchased a nice looks like new all stainless 5906 with Novak fixed sights. Shooting 124gr handloads at what book says should be 1,020fps. Pistol cycles fine but shoots about 4 inches low at 35 feet. Is this common? Do hotter loads shoot higher?

I've noticed that many semi-auto pistols shoot to point of aim if the dot on the front sight is placed over where you want the bullet to impact. If the top of the front sight is placed over the point of intended impact then the pistol will shoot low.

Heavier bullets print higher. Try some 147 grain 9mm. My 3913, and 910 like it best.

You might also check with S&W to see about a lower height front sight. They make a few different height front sights. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

FWIW:

Add a set of Crimson Tracelasergrips.. Problem solved...

Just kidding of course, but I bought my 5906 with the intentions of adding a set of CT's as the 5906 is my "home defense" pistol.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

I own and shoot the 3rd generation pistols listed below. They all shoot between 1" high to 1" low at 21 to 30 feet. Most are either a tad high or right on the money, elevation-wise.

Except for the 3913TSW pre-rail that I haven't picked up yet, I've shot between 200 and 750 rounds from each of the following S&W pistols over the past two years: 669, 915, 1006, 1076, two 3913s, 3913TSW, 4006, 4013, 4014, 4506-1, 4516-1, 4516-2, 4566, 4576, 5903, 5906, 6904, and two 6906s.

FWIW, I've not found any "general tendency to shoot low" with my 3rd generation pistols. However, I will note that standard production 3rd generation pistols do not ususally have finely tuned, crisp target triggers (although some are better than others

) so it's easy to pull down and shoot low while firing them. As you can see, I shoot them a fair amount and have gotten use them.

Went to the range today with the low shooting 5906, a TSW 5906, a 6906 and a Sig P6. All have fixed sights. Shot all pistols with Win White Box at 30'.

The TSW shot about 1" above point of aim. The 6906 shot to point of aim. The plain 5906 and Sig P6 shot about 3" below point of aim.

Taught me again that every pistol is different and that adjustable sights can be helpful.
