5906 TSW decocker

I am on my first Gen 3 smith and I just got it from AIM. Overall I am very happy with the gun visually. I was wondering how hard the hammer was supposed to drop when the decocker is used? When I use the decocker the hammer drops....hard.

Switching from the "safe and decocked mode to the ready to fire DA mode" the hammer travels further down when put into ready mode, leading me to believe the hard drop may be normal and the hammer is not going all the way to the primer when its decocked.

Just seems like it drops harder than I would expect, wanted experts advice

Your thoughts are spot on. It does drop pretty hard and the hammer is blocked from the firing pin in the decocked/safe position.

Not to worry. I had the same thoughts when I began shooting 3rd Gens. I was accustomed to the "controllable" drop on my Sig P239 but the Smiths just.......drop! You will get used to it. I have five of them now and all of them have the same fast, heavy drop when using the decocker.

Enjoy your new 3rd Gen and start making space for more. Most of us have learned that one is not enough.

You're right on all counts. Sigs are excellent firearms but I just can't warm up to them. I do like the 'controllable' decocking you mentioned though. The hard drop on the 3rd Gens can be a bit unnerving but the hammer clearly can't make it to the firing pin.

Cock your '06 and look inside the slide where the hammer falls and you will see the firing pin inside what I'd call a channel in the barrel/axle portion of the decock/safety lever. When you pull the trigger, the hammer can smack the firing pin when it falls.

Now, while holding the hammer back with your thumb, rotate the decock lever down. Your will see that the firing pin gets covered and the hammer will only contact the barrel/axle portion of the decocking mechanism.

I guess it's all what you get used to as trying out a Sig after using 3rd Gens for quite awhile, I find the way the hammer on a Sig decocks "weird".

You have a very nice pistol and you got it at a great price!

Be ready to get more though, I'm on my second in four months!

Lets not forget the firing pin block that only the trigger can lift when pulled. If the trigger is not pulled the gun can't go bang , that's with 2nd and 3rd gens. 1st gens don't have a firing pin block but do have the half cock step on the hammer.

Regardless, I ALWAYS insure the barrel is pointed in a benign location when dropping the hammer via the decocker.
