I have a two-toned 5943 SSV that I was planning to sell. I have never fired the gun which is probably why I'm selling it. The thing is that there is a noticeable rattle when the gun is handled. I have narrowed it down to the firing pin safey lever next to the ejector. The ejector is under spring pressure but the firing pin saftey lever is free to move without any spring pressure and does not pop up but stays flush with the frame. Should this lever be under spring pressure? Am I looking at a simple fix or is any fix needed at all? If I sell the gun as is I would certainly like to have an idea of what costs it's new owner would have to put it right and be able to disclose any issues up front.

Thanks for any help.

No. If it only has the firing pin safety lever, no spring.

If it also has the "firing pin retainer spacer lever" (two levers on the right side), then it needs a sping.

No, it only has the one lever on the right side and there isn't room for another lever.

Is it normal that the one single lever doesn't pop up off of level from the frame when the slide is off?

I'd also add that the Numrich schematic for the 5943 only shows the one lever on the right. It's just surprising how much noise it causes when it jiggles up and down with the slide on.

I think the problem is a non-issue. I have never fired the gun so I hadn't given it a pre-firing lube. Once I hit the lever with a drop of oil the noise settled down. It's still there a bit but no more of a rattle than I've heard in other Smiths. The release lever goes upwards and engages the firing pin saftery as it supposed to. All looks well.

Yes, there's no spring under it. The drawbar will move it when pulled.

Right, an early diagram, before the 'lever' was added.
Maybe that's one of the reasons they added the second lever.:)

I agree, non-issue.

I once had a 5943 SSV. I really regret ever letting it get away. It was one of the best shooting Smith autos I've ever had. Plus, they're apparently fairly uncommon. I have only ever seen one, other than the one I had.
And, yes, mine rattled, too.

Thanks for those comments and info guys. I can now move this gun on to a new owner without concern.
