Been tinkering with a 5946 that recently came my way. I like how it is shooting after doing a trigger job. It is kind of like shooting a striker fired gun, (same trigger pull all the time, no decocker or safeties) but with the added bonus of being steel, not plastic.
Anybody else have any of these with a KNCXXXX serial number? Just curious as to whether this has any significance, e.g., indicates original buyer. SCSW pg. 401 suggests I should be expecting a S/N starting with T or later for this pistol, so perhaps it was some sort of one-off.
My 5946 has the forged trigger and hammer, and a metal disconnector, so I assume it is a relatively "early" model. Came with the Novak nite sites on the back.

Thanks,

John

My 5946 has a RJF prefix, I recently purchased it as a used gun from my local gun shop and it has all the original paperwork and is in excellent condition and once I got it home and inspected it further I believe it is unfired. I guess there is really no way to be certain but I am a fan of the 3rd generation Smith's and was surprised to find this one in such great condition.

I have a pretty extensive list of 3rd gen serial numbers and features that I have gleaned from Gunbroker. The very first 3rd gen 5906 had an A prefix. The most common serial number prefixes are T & V. I can't pin down the order, but K, M, P (maybe a misread R), R are next.
It then jumps back to T, all of which have either the billboard lettering on the slide or are TSW models with MIM parts.
We then see B prefixes, some E and finally, U. U guns typically have mid 2000 production dates from the code on the box or fired case. Again all the B,E, & U prefix guns have billboard slides and MIM parts.
Hope this helps.
