Bought a 6" 617 a couple weeks ago with the box and all the stuff that came with it new for $480. I think that was a real steal though.

Whats the going price of a 617 prelock 4 inch with combat grips box and all the paper work?

6 shot or 10 shot ?? Either one would be $600 and up in my area.
10 shots seem to be in demand but, I prefer the 6 shot.

I have 2-4in 6 shot and 1- 6in 6 shot all prelocks W/ wood combat stocks and I wouldn't even consider selling them.

Around here they would be $500 to $600. The S&W wood combat grips alone are worth $150 so that is also a factor.

Looking to buy a 617 4" or 63 5" just for range practice.
I know the 63 is a lot lighter.
Any suggestions ?…..

I just got my 617, but it quickly became a favorite. Mine has the 6 inch barrel and it is pretty heavy. It's super accurate though.

Two years ago I picked up a 4" 617-1 in excellent condition with wood combats but without papers and box for $550. At the time I thought I might have overpaid. I no longer think that I did.

That is a super nice collection, Iowahunter! My preference is your 6 inch barrel model with full target trigger & hammer. I had one exactly like it at one time, but unfortunately let it go to fund another purchase several years ago at the fairgrounds gunshow. Do I ever regret that sale!

Really?

I came to re-join as I had a coworker who has an interest in buying mine and has offered $20 (which I had no intention for selling for that price anyway). I figures they were in the $40 range, guess I need to lurk a bit more to get caught up on S&W prices :D

If you watch the classifieds here and thEbay, you'll see they sell for $100-$160 on a regular basis.

That said, they don't seem to add /deduct $150 to the price of a 617/17 at sale time. I'd say that gun could easily sell around here for $600-$650.
If you can get it for less, get it. The 4" 617 is one of the best balanced, fun to shoot revolvers in my stable.

I think they are non-existent in my area. I never see a 4'' variation, which I have been looking for. Saw one go one this forum recently for either 695 or 795 and it was listed 10 minutes before it was bought. I would think that their popularity keeps them in collections and as shooters, along with the economy of 22 rounds compared to others. Oh well. Got another gunshow today.Maybe I will get lucky.

They sell for over $100 if they are plain with no grain unless they are the new ones which are made with laminated wood. I see them sell all the time for $150 at gun shows on Ebay, and and GB. When they have great grain and color they sell fast and the bidding is high. I have two sets I bought last year for $125 each and was happy to get them. I've also seen several dealers asking $200 for them a gun shows but they seem to have the same ones show after show.

Your co worker isn't your friend if he knows what they are worth.

He's not a gun person, just wants nice grips for a revolver his dad passed to him years ago.

Thanks for the someone off-topic question, guess the $10 I paid in a pawn show five years ago was a good price then :D

Here's my track on the model:
Smith & Wesson 617-6 Plus Revolver in .22, Long Rifle 4-in Bbl. Bluebook of Gun Values (30th Edition) indicates between $476 in 98% condition and $631 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 32 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $650 over a period of 6 Yrs 5 Mos ending February 18, 2010. The average price as of that date was $490. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights, all represented as 95% or better, no distinction engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $940.

You can see on the chart below the average price trend is at about $580 as of February 2010. A good quality 617P would command a higher than average price, especially with box, papers, tools, etc. Lesser quality or without box, paper, tools would command a lower price. So, as a guess, I'd say $50 above or below the trend would be the range.

The lock is less of an issue on this gun because it's not primarily a self-defense firearm. Lockless fanatics might pay higher prices.

Thanks, Big Cholla. I haven't any data on the Winnie. I just have data on guns I own, used to own, or lust after. If you have historical data, I could create the chart but you could, too. I can show you how.

It may be worthwhile for you to look at completed auction on some of the auction sites. Isn't the 61 used as an arcade rifle?

5Wire: Thanks for the offer, but I follow the 'completed sales' link on gunbroker quite a bit. I am not really ready to sell my 61s as of yet. One is a 1958 model that is LNIB. The other is 1964 year model that I 'rescued and restored'. It is my shooter. The other just sits and appreciates. :-).

The arcade rifle you mention started out to be the Win. M 1906, then later was the Win. M 62. I was at an arcade in a St. Louis Amusement park that had been there 'forever'. I was amazed that their rifles were Win. M. 63s. That was before the 63s really started appreciating in value. I have no doubt that the 61 was used someplace, sometime in an arcade, but never in great quantity. ......... Big Cholla
