I purchase a new 617-6 to set up for steel challenge matches. I don't know how in the world it ever left the factory with the muzzle looking the way it did, but I had other plans for it anyway. Here's a few before and after pics.

Truly sad to see how there's no apparent quality control inspection along the assembly line. Your post factory crown turned out great, and from the looks of things you even had it bead blasted.

I hope it's a good shooter!

Thanks! It shot well even with the funky factory crown job but it's a tack driver now. I recut the crown and glass beaded it, installed the Apex hammer and replaced all the MIM parts with the good stuff. It's set it up to match the 625 JM that I use for IDPA. I'm really liking the way it turned out.

I'm glad that you were able to do your own work and are happy with the result! Are you shooting anywhere near Montgomery or Frederick counties?

Cheers

I'm about as far west as you can go and still be in Maryland so it's closer to do the matches in Morgantown and Thomas WV.

Roger that! I'm planning on heading out that way towards the end of May; maybe hit the North Branch and some calmer places with a fly rod.

Man that sucks, but that crown job looks great. I had to take another look at my recently acquired M617 just to be sure. Whew, it's all good!

Pitiful!!! Quality control seems to be lacking in some cases at S&W over the past several years. Some worker at the factory might have dropped it before putting in the box to ship. Great job on the repair; looks great.

Thanks guys! That was my first attempt at a recessed 11 degree target crown so I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. The factory defect didn't appear to be from a drop or dent. It looked more like a machining mishap by the uniformity of the divot.

First of all , very impressive machining on the crown especially for a first attempt! I have thought of having my 617 re-crowned but I doubt many "gunsmiths" could perform to the level of your work.

As to the the factory flaw that was totally unacceptable. It is hard to imagine how such defects get out the door these days in the gun industry.

Thanks! It really wasn't that difficult to do. I used a 1/2" 11 degree crown cutter from Brownells, worked slowly with lots of cutting oil and cleaned the chips out of the cutter every couple of turns. I used some lapping compound on a 1/2" felt disc to polish it before bead blasting the entire gun. I've used the 45 degree piloted cutters to chamfer a lot of cylinders and always had good results so I figured it was worth a shot to do the muzzle.

Crown came out perfect! I want to shoot it!

Anytime you're in the area! It's pretty sweet to shoot. It came from the factory with the DA trigger pull a little over 11 pounds (actually not that bad for a rimfire revolver). With the new internals it's down to under 7 and is still running 100% with CCI standard velocity.

Hard to believe it shot well from factory with that crown. Now you don't have to look at that mess and gained accuracy also.Nice work.
