I have a model 617 pre-lock and have heard people mention a "dash" and "no dash" models. How can I tell which model I have?

617 no-dash: forged hammer/trigger, 6-shot, non-drilled&tapped frame
617-1: forged hammer/trigger, 6-shot, new-style rear sight leaf w/ drilled & tapped frame
617-2: forged hammer/trigger, 10-shot, new-style rear sight leaf w/ drilled & tapped frame (all later 617s have the new-style rear sight and D&Ted frame). The cylinders on these started out aluminum alloy; by the end of the -2, S&W had figured out how to make a 10-shot stainless steel cylinder and were shipping 617-2s with SS cylinders.
617-3: MIM hammer/trigger, 6-shot
617-4: MIM hammer/trigger, 10-shot
617-5: same as 617-3, w/ Internal Lock System
617-6 (current production): same as 617-4, w/ Internal Lock System

AWESOME collection Big Larry!!! The second one down, is it a round butt? If so, where did you get those grips? I would love to have a set grips like that on mine.

The grips on the middle gun are factory 80's era SB K/L target grips with speedoader cutout.
If your gun is a round butt you can get RB to SB conversion grips like these.

Second gun down is a no dash square butt that someone sold the combat grips off it and put these on it. I removed them and now it has its correct combat grips exactly like the 4" no dash. The bottom gun is a dash 2 and a round butt with custom made Rosewood checkered Hogues. Big Larry

AWESOME pics guys. Hey Engine49guy, where do you get those grips at in the picture? Hogue grips are comfy but they just don't have the look of good ol' wood grips on stainless steel. looks like 410bore has such a selection that he doesn't need to worry about grips! Maybe some day I'll have a spread like that too. I appreciate everybody's help.
