617 or 625?

I have a 617 which I love. But I just started reloading and saw a 625 performance at my lgs. I am tempted to sell the 617 to fund the 625. Is this crazy? I can only have 1. I have other .22s...

Depends on if it's a pre lock 625.

I'd say, sell one of the other .22's and keep the 617.

Sorry to hear that you have to sell one for the other. What is the barrel length and how many shots? If you decide to sell, how much are you asking for it?

If the sale of your 617 is the only way you can fund a 625 then it is not crazy. There's no shortage of 617s so you could replace the 617 later, but if you're going to trade the 617 in on the 625 you'd only get the whole sale used price or less so if you replaced it later that would be an expensive loan from yourself. I think it would be smarter to save for a 625. There's no shortage of them either so there will be another available after you've saved up enough.

Save for the 625, and keep Your 617....You'll be glad that You kept it.

I've wanted a model 57 with 8-3/8" barrel for at least 30 years....and it's only recently that I acquired that revolver.

I'm not saying that You should wait for 30 years, I'm only suggesting a little extra patience and diligence to obtain Your desired firearm.

Probably a ton of here than have stood where you're standing now. Selling off one gun to fund another.

As said in the one of the posts above, if your 617 is an earlier model (no lock etc) 6 shot? KEEP IT. You'll be stepping backwards and in the future one day look back with some serious regrets. Not knowing what your 'other' 22's are it's hard to say sell one or two if necessary to fund the 625. However, that would be my personel choice today providing the value of your 617 if it's an older model 6 shot.

Don't do it.....

I waited a while.... and now have both. The 617 came last. I really think of all my hand guns I would let everything go except the 625 and 617. Get the harder to obtain one first unless a smoking deal falls into your lap. I am not hung up on the lock / no lock feature but if you find a nice example of either at a fair price get it.

Why sell the 617? Save and get the 625. The 617 will make a good "understudy" gun so you can do much of your practice with the .22 and then do only a reduced amount with the more expensive .45.

If you've got a job and get a regular paycheck, why not ask your gun shop if you can put the 625 on layaway? I've yet to hear anybody suggest layaway in lieu of a trade, and it's about time somebody did. I've got a 617, and it would be the last gun I'd ever get rid of. And if I had a 625, I would probably be thinking that I could have gotten a really nice 1911 or single action army (some of these shoot .45 Colt) to shoot the .45 out of instead.

That's a no brainer for me. I get more pleasure shooting 24 rounds of .45ACP than 500 rounds of .22.

The only good thing about a .22 revolver is the fact its cheap to shoot.

Now, the real fun factor is shooting the .44 magnum. Probably shooting one cylinder load from it is more fun than 500 rounds of shooting .22's.

Of course that's just my opinion.

By this way of thinking, I'm guessing you might suggest that taking out a high powered rifle every once in a while to wipe it down is better than shooting a .44 Magnum

Two of my all time favorite S&W revolvers in my collection are my 8 3/8" model 617 and my 5" model 625 (both are no-locks). If I didn't have one I would never consider trading the other up to get it. I would save or arrange a layaway plan as the case may be. Both revolvers are in current production but don't stay in the display cases long so might be considered scarce. If you find what you want, do everything you can to secure it because it may be years before a deal comes along again. Of course you can follow the on-line gun auctions but that's more work and suspense and you'll often end up paying top dollar for your gun anyway.
