I recently purchased a new Model 617-6 and I find it interesting that on the left side of the barrel is the inscription ".22 Long Rifle CTG" and on the right side is the S&W name. This is just the opposite of the Model 617s I've seen in many photos I've looked at. Anybody know if this is typical?

Love the 617! Mine are wearing cocobolo Hogue's.
The big butt on the 6" sure helps counter the muzzle weight. Both are fine shooters.

I picked up a 617-6 8 3/8" a couple of weeks ago. It was made in 1982. I believe that that was the last year for the 8 3/8" barrel.

I plan to try it out this weekend.

just noticed this.....it couldnt have been a 617-6 made in 1982...that is current production...and 617's weren't made until the late 1980's.

My 617-1 does service as a deer hunting warmer upper practice piece. Cheap practice for it's big brother 629.
