617's with counterbored muzzle

My 617 no dash w/8 3/8" barrel has an unusual feature, about a 3/8" counterbore on the muzzle. I've never seen another with the counterbore.

So, how many variations of the 617's have the counterbore?

Did you buy it new? I've never seen any 617s with that feature.

Yes, bought it brand new, right after S&W introduced the 617's. Maybe 90 or 91?

My 617 no dash with the 8 3/8" barrel had the same counterbored muzzle.
I did not buy it new, but I venture to say it had less than fifty rounds thru it.

Would someone mind explaining to me what the counterbored muzzel is.
