619 Front Sight Way Too Tall

I've been quiet, but finally I have to ask . . . . There's lots of discussion here about serious modifications to a fixed sight gun. It's not unheard of for one to be off a bit, but this one seems to be way off. That makes me think that something else is going on. Perhaps it's something shooter-related. (Yeah, I had to bring that up). What's your sight picture, OP? Have you had someone else shoot it? Best to figure out if it is indeed a gun problem before removing metal.

I just can't believe they made it like that. Obviously no consideration was paid in development. All the 1905 HE's I've had with unmodified 1/2 moons shot low, but that seemed intentional so users could tailor fit. My 3" 36-1 shoots a little low but reasonable. My 4" 13-1 is dead freaking nuts with 110-125's and appears unmodified. I had to take a little off 638 but at least it stayed on an 8x11 target out of the box, and with what little needed removed didn't alter its overall profile.
I lack artistic vision. I'm a straight line kinda guy in expression, though I find curves appealing lol.
I was hoping someone else had the exact same problem and cut their's in a way that looked from the factory appropriateish lol

Nope, shooter's just fine. Several have shot it. 🙄

...it's been out of production 20yrs, Smith doesn't need any cover ran for them lol

Lucky, even though this isn't a S&W, my Freedom Arms M83 was shooting really low out of the box. It has fixed rear sights, so I needed to file the front sight blade down to get it to shoot POA. So, when new I brought a file with me to the range and VERY GRADUALLY filed the front sight down in tiny increments between firing groups (since it's harder to add material back than remove it), which meant firing a LOT of rounds. Considering this gun is in .454 Casull, that was ANYTHING BUT a "fun" range day!!! At the range, I got it filed down to the correct height to zero it, then when I got it back home, I finely profiled and radiused the sight with a file and stone to give it a contour that appealed to me while also making it less prone to snagging in my chest holster. This is the result. If you don't like having a long flat, you could always give it a small flat followed by a gradual slope angle back towards the muzzle, then blending to a radius like I did here for more aesthetic appeal.

With my 605, the 124 gr. plated FP shoot 2.5" low @20yds, 124gr.JHP hits 2" low but, my LHBWC's are dead on and I keep them all 700-775 velocity. So, I shoot mostly the wadcutters. Just the B.C. and the kick in my old man hands varies the drop.

Krogan, I have a 645, and 745 that shoot 6 inches high. Both have the 745 rear sight. I can’t bring myself to destroy the factory original condition.

I have a 4566 that shoots 2 inches low. The tritium front sight keeps me from taking that sight down a bit.

I have a 4506 that shoots 4 inches to the left. They must have put that rear sight in with a 10 ton press. I can’t budge it. I hate, Hate, HATE fixed sights! All those guns group 5 shots around 2 inches from a rest on a good day at 25 yards. But I very seldom shoot them, because I can’t zero them.

Fixed sights aren’t bad if the front is replaceable with no tritium, and you have a rear sight that you can slide to one side or another.

You know, the joke may be on us. Smith and Wesson may have purposely made the front sight too tall, so that it could be filed down to suit the individual shooter and load.

I believe they did in the pre-model # era. They don't with modern stuff, they just don't care lol.
They're able to make them properly regulated, like my model 13. Probably stricter standards with LE contracts.
But they are more snag resistant and more durable than adjustable sights. I guess I'm fortunate it's just an elevation issue lol
