620 for pack gun

I've been away from 357's for a while but wanted to get one I could carry without worrying about it getting beat up. I was looking at new 66's, but found a 620 pretty cheap.


I don't like the looks of the weird muzzle/crown/washer, but its not a deal breaker.

What are current thoughts on this model?

I used to carry a 4" full lug GP100 but didn't like the weight and balance and switched to a CZ 2075 in 40 when those came out.

So..... I am looking at the S&W m60's too.

It's well regarded. It's basically a M686-6 "Plus" with a shrouded ejector, instead of a full lug, and a two piece barrel. Product code was 164401.

The two piece barrel guns are known for their high accuracy potential. Lots of members say they shoot better than their older Smiths with traditional barrels.

In a way, it's a lot like the M686 Mountain Gun that people pay big bucks for.

Model 60 and Ruger sp 101

Both great trial guns for most application in USA. Can be loaed with 357 158 gr in that instance.

Is there any special care needed when shooting cast loads? That little gap for the barrel washer looks like a giant lead/lube trap to me.

I was just shooting my 620 this afternoon. Such an outstanding piece I bought a second one .

There's a member here who had his barrel liner shear at the end where it forms the crown. Thats the only example I've seen of such failure. I personally have thousands of rounds through mine and can attest it is by far the most accurate revolver in my safes when compared to the old 27's, 29's, 19's and 66's. Love'em all, but when I'm testing new .357/.38 handloads, I use the 620 because my groups are consistantly the smallest with that gun.

I have a Model 520 (similar to the 620, but blued with a titanium cylinder). As the others have stated, these are extremely accurate. I shoot mine a LOT. I shoot only my home cast bullets in mine.

Hey everyone, thanks for your comments. I went back to get it and there were too many issues with the sellers paperwork and the guy behind the counter was a new kid who didn't know which way was up.

Oh well... back to searching. I'm enjoying my new 69 so much, a 66 might make a nice companion.
