625 4"

Update: the previous owner evidently did a bubba on the action, but luckily I live fifteen minutes away from Bill Oglesby's shop. I already have it back and the trigger is very nice now.

I was fortunate a couple years ago to find this 4" -3 with the original box, grips etc. I swapped to the Hogue grips as I'm able to have an improved hold on the revolver with them. Also changed the front sight to the gold dot from SDM. I too had heard there were fewer 4" of the -3 variety.

The clear bias against moonclips is ludicrous and supposedly caused by revo shooter who was using speedloaders and strenuously objected to moonclips. If I use moonclips I must meet a much higher power factor. Making rules to suit ONE loud complainer is bush league stuff!!!

It is my understanding that the higher power factor requirement for moon clip guns is to offset the speed of the reload versus speed loader charged guns. If they hadn't made this distinction the division would be dominated by moon clip guns and the .38 Spl's would disappear.

I was under the impression that of the 625-3 iteration, the they did make less 4" barreled than 3" ones. However, over the total production of the 625 thus far, the 4" guns vastly outnumber the 3" guns.

@oldbrownhat - Those are Pachmayr Gripper grips. They were standard equipment on the 625-2's as well.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

This is just my opinion and take it for what you paid for it. ;)

Three inch guns are rare, collectively, and command a premium. 5" guns are also, overall, more uncommon. Four inch guns are great packing tools and as such many experienced shooter like them.

I think in this current climate, I would not let go of any now going forward. Obviously, newer still available guns with 3" or 5" will be less than special runs. Consult the book. Watch auctions. You will see a pattern to what collectors want. Any good S&W is better than cash in the bank right now in my opinion. I think we got another 2-4 years of figuring out values, then it will keep pace with inflation mostly, unless the market deems one variant better than the other. Best, TH

I was cruising a local gun show back in the early 90s and a guy had both 3" and 4" 625-3s for sale. They were slightly used but near new condition.....bought 'em both. The 3" has a second trigger and hammer(no spur) installed along with a fixed sight rear. Very nice carry piece which can be restored to original configuration.

Bob, you done good! About the same time, at a show I traded a Colt 2000 to a guy who thought they were gonna be collectible for two near mint 1917s, one Colt and one Smith.... Just wish I'd been smart enough to hang on to them...... something about 45 ACP revolvers...

I always wanted a Colt2000 but kept waiting until a few years ago. I forget what I paid but it certainly wasn't big bucks. I still haven't fired it.
