I have seen suggestions here on which 625 is a better purchase;is there anything in particular "wrong" with a 625-4 ? Just curious !

If you have a chance to buy one, do it. I personally think it is the best of the 625's. I own one (A SAC one of 500) and it is a great handling shooter.

Some people prefer the chromed hammer and trigger of the 625-3 and -2, as the -4 and later switched to case colored parts. However, the -4 also has the newer style rear sight, which is already drilled and tapped for scope mounting.

ILLWIND ,how accurate is yours and do you handload for it ? Is it a 5 inch gun?
KurtC, is there a good reason for wanting the chromed hammer and trigger?

Mine is a 4" similar to a mountain gun style (Pre mountain gun??) as they came out in 1994. I believe that all the Springfield Arms Commemorative models are all 4" long with the lightweight tapered barrel, not the full lug style. It looks closer to model 26 except for a stainless steel, & shorter barrel. Wonderful shooters, I bought mine new for the sum of $480.00

Oh yes, I forgot, it has never had a jacketed bullet go down the barrel. Unique or HS6 and a home cast Lyman 200gr SWC will do 2" or so @ 25yds off sandbags...If my eyes were better, I am sure it would do better. I had a Hakko red dot on top once, but it handled funny so it came off. I have never used factory ammo in it...only handloads.

I'd get it. Any decent 625 -3 or -4 is worth getting, assuming one is not paying a Wimer or Fugate level price.

I have a 625-4 with a 5 inch barrel and have no complaints whatsoever.... very accurate with handloads or factory

The -4 may be the best of the 625's but even the very early - numbers which sometimes needed to go back to Smith were quickly corrected. A 625 that checks out for you is worth having no matter what dash, the -4 is just desert after a great meal!

Just like every other feature, the chromed parts became desireable when they were no longer available.

Some folks feel that the post-94 case colored hammers and triggers are not as vivid as earlier case colored parts. It is merely a matter of individual preference. I prefer the way the rear sight is inletted on the -4, and that overrides the appeal of the chromed parts (IMHO).

I have three 625-4s and I love all of them. The only issues with two of them are slightly tight cylinder throats. My latest acquisition was an unfired SAC Mountain Gun which I lightly customized myself (removed the hammer spur, installed grooved trigger and lightened the action just enough to still reliably fire all commercial primers). I even used the SAC to get back into revolver competition at the USPSA Summer Blast and it did not let me down. I like that gun so much that I would like to get another Mountain Gun barrel, if that's possible.

You can't possibly go wrong with a 625-4.
