I know plenty of people like the 627 8 shot for speed on steel , knockdown steel, etc

But, are many people using the V-Comp variety ?

I'm just worried it's to heavy of a gun to compete with efficiently, especially front heavy.

Anybody with first hand experience care to chime in?

I own and use a V-comp, regular profile, and a custom barreled 627. The differences to me are negligible. I know several people that jumped on the 327 for steel. A couple came back to the 627. A couple did not.

So many things about guns are entirely personal preference, and, to some extent what is available to the shooter. I know accepting this would cut down traffic on these lists, but, if there was truly a "best" for everybody, we all would be using it.

More weight, less sight movement (maybe for you). Less weight quicker between targets (maybe for you). Most probably: more good practice more better results for you on steel.

I have shot the 4", 5", and the 627 V comp. I one a PC 5" 627 and of all of them, I prefer the 4" the weight of the v comp slowed me down.

I have shot the 627 V-Comp, 627PC nad 327PC JM. The difference between the two 627's is virtually imperceptible. The 327PC JM with titanium cylinder and titanium barrel shroud comes back on target significantly faster than the 627's. I use only light 38 Special loads in my 327 - 2.8 gr. Trail Boss with a 158 gr. LRN bulet.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one using Trail Boss for my 38's. I am also using a 627 for Steel Challenge. I started with a 627 PC. Have been using a M&P 327 R8. I just ordered a C-more railway for it. I'm using 120 gn RNFP with just under 4 gns of Trail Boss.
