627PC or Older 27?

Alright, now I'm on the fence again. I was just about set on the 627PC....then I talked to my old man about it. He made fun of me for wanting a .357. He's a .44 Mag man and he says I need the 629PC for more power. He says I should get the .44, especially if I wanted to carry the gun with me deer season.

But I've never enjoyed shooting .44 mags. It's just a little too much recoil to be enjoyable to me. For a hunting pistol only, it would be okay. But I don't want to spend the money on a PC gun and only shoot once a year before deer season. I just can't figure out if I should toughen up and get used to shooting a .44 mag more or if I should go with a caliber I know I enjoy and just be more cautious with shot placement if I decide to take the 627 hunting. Anyone have any advice?

Many deer have fallen to the 357 Magnum

I'd go for an older gun. As time goes by they will continue to increase in price and will eventually all end up in the hands of folks who will refuse to part with them. The quality and craftsmanship is better. I hate to say it but the new S&W's that I've handled and shot can't compare with the older models. Get a good 27 while you can. You can always pick up a new gun later if you happen to still want it.

I understand what you're saying. And I tend to give the same advice to others who pose the same kind of questions on forums. But this is my old man we are talking. I hold his opinion very high and he's always given me good advice. This reminds me of when I was little, we were both big into ATVs. I would always want to play it safe a ride the smaller bikes and dad was always pushing me to ride the bigger, faster bikes. I would muster up the courage and try the bigger bikes and was always glad I did in the end. For some reason, this situation reminds me so much of those times.

I dont own a M627, but have shoot them. They are nice shooters of course.

having said that, I am bias because all I like are older, nice blued S&W's. I own several 27's . I just think they are a great gun, all the way around.
I am not saying the 627 is not, just my preference.
If you wanted to save a few bucks and still have a winner( in my opinion) look for a nice Highway Patrolman, I love my 28-2's........

I put this in the newer thread because I'm kind of leaning toward the PC, but I could be swayed. I'm in the market for a big N frame 357 and I'm having a hard time deciding on the two. I've shot the 27 and really like it, but I've never shot the 627PC and I like the look of the PC. I don't have a dedicated purpose for the gun. Just something that I can shoot some hot 357 loads through without worrying about the gun. This would be a 357-only gun. No 38s would be shot with it. Any thoughts or recommendations on the two would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just do it!

I have a 627PC and it has now become my favorite handgun to shoot - super accurate, fantastic trigger, great looking and 8 shots of .357 to boot!

Worth the extra $'s in my opinion.

If someone were to invade my home at night it is (now) the gun that I would reach for (along with my Howard Leight Electronic Earmuffs - I'll let the burgler be the one who goes deaf which is probably going to be the least of his resulting health issues ;) )

Well, I found a shop that has a NIB 627 V-Comp for $1300 +$25 shipping +$15 transfer fee, so I'd be in for $1340 total. Buds has the 627PC for $960 with free shipping and $15 transfer fee, so $975 total. So for $365 difference, I think the V-Comp just isn't worth that much more than the PC.

Personally I would still stay away from the V-Comp version if I were buying this revolver over again.

I like to get my pistols "showroom clean" again each time after shooting them and I have enough trouble with my 627 PC in that regard (although I don't really regard this as a tedious chore).

But that "compensator" attachment at the end of the V-Comp barrel must be an absolute dog especially if you are a clean freak like me.

I also haven't really seen the need for it myself except for looking good in "photo shoots" (and I also heard that many V-Comp owners actually remove them to avoid cleaning it).

A) Buy THIS

B) Invite your Dad to shoot it with 125 grainer .357 mags

C) Enjoy for life.

:)

I've owned LOTS of .357's over the years, 27's, pre 27's , 28's (nope, never a Reg Mag, too rich for my blood/wallet) and this lil ole PC blaster is one of the finest items Smith has produced in years imo. VERY smooth trigger, waaaay more accurate than I can hold it, and if 8 rounds of .357 flamethrower action in rapid succession doesn't float your boat...er...check your pulse. :)

Well, I just bought a 627-5 Performance Center that another member posted for sale in the classifieds section here. I paid the $850 that he asked, which included shipping. My FFL will do the transfer for $15 so I will have $865 in the gun. I hope the condition is as good as I'm expecting it to be. It came with the aluminum performance center case, two sets of grips, and moon clips. I will post some pictures as soon as I can. I'm anxious to see this thing in person.

hello cirrus, your gonna be happy, after reading your last post ,i had to look at it again, there is not a flaw on it,you will be happy

Thats good to hear. I'm just anxious because I took a chance and I've never even handled a 627 or a PC gun so I'm just excited to get my hands on something new.

I trust that the gun is exactly as you described it. I just tend to get like a kid in a toy store when I have to wait on a new gun. You probably know the feeling too.

I would get a 627. I love blued guns and have a could of 27's but the stainless guns are just easier to care for. Here are my two 627's a 627-0 and 627pc "blood work"

I'd love to have that no-lock 627 UDR.:D Was thinking of the new one with the lock but haven't been able to do it.......................yet.

Are you still looking?

One popped up on Gunsamerica last night
Great information. Bummer to hear about their scarcity. It seems like I have taste for things difficult to find. I like the integrate scope base. I'd had thoughts in the past about a reflex/holo sight on a hunting revolver that could be easily taken off for general fun shooting. That gun would have been perfect. I will keep my eye out for one, but better be looking for an alternate.

I just recently got it, and had it to the range one time.
I really enjoyed shooting it.
My first N frame.
