Did this gun come with a factory hogue grip? I bought it from a pawn shop about 20 years ago and this is what came on it. If not, what would have been the factory grip on it?

Serial. AYS8XXX

Thanks,

Not sure but..., SCSW-4th on page 307 shows that the 629 Classic started in with the 629-3 in 1990. On page 308, it lists the Classic Hunter that came in the 629-1 engineering change, but that had an unfluted cylinder. So, no luck there.
I can say that the 629-1's, without the underlug of the classic, that I have observed all had wood stocks, earlier with football cut and later with speed loader cut. All of the 629 Classics I have observed, and all the ones I own, came with different versions of Hogue grips.
Probably safe to say it came with those Hogues, but to know for sure, you're going to need the letter. Best of luck to you!

My 6" has full lug, why the difference? One would think both being -1 that would be the same.

Are you sure your gun is a -1? I've never seen a -1 with a pinned front sight. My 629-1 came with checkered target stocks which were standard issue, according to the SCoSW. I since purchased a gorgeous set of checkered targets and these combat stocks for it. I also swapped out the factory rear sight for a Millett as I use this 629 strictly for target shooting.

Yep that is what it says under the yoke. I can post a pic.

There are some odd balls. I have a 629 Hunter which is a PC revolver that I bought new in 2020. It has a fluted 8.375" barrel, a non fluted cylinder, a square butt, all kinks of Pic rails, and here is the weird part, its a 4 screw!

Did they ever put grips on guns that were actually stamped with the "Hogue" brand name? All of the factory guns with Hogue grips that I've ever seen have had S&W stamped on them.

The one "the pilgrim" posted says Hogue on it and he says it came that way.

Wonder if maybe they had the non-logo grips that they normally used then they ran out of non-logo grips, then in a pinch, they used logo grips instead. No telling with S&W they seem random about some of the things they do.
