my wife bought me a 629-1 classic hunter when stationed in germany in 1988 and I was wondering what this should be valued at today for insurance or just its general value. It was my fathersday gift in case the question comes up.

According to the S&W Catalog, 4th ed, As new in the box $1000, Excellent $750 and Very Good $650. Replacement value depends upon where you're located and availability. In other words, for insurance - pick a number.

A grand would work for the insurance adjuster. I’m sure you could find some online seller pricing a similar enough version for $1,000.
