I found a Model 629-2 Mountain Gun (Mountain Revolver) today that has been magnaported. My questions are: Is this a factory gun (i.e. the magnaporting)? If the gun was magnaported after it left the factory how much does this devalue the gun? Finally, the gun is in decent shape, has been fired and has some scratches (surface not deep) and it is priced at about $650, is this reasonable?

Thanks in advance.

Depending on mechanical condition that sounds like a pretty good price to me.

I was in the same situation. I was unable to document any factory ported mountain revolvers. I bought it for about the same money, fine mechanically but it had some finish issues. After testing for accuracy, I sent it off to Magnaport. For a full custom build, I've been patiently waiting, going on 10 months. Good luck with yours

TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, NO MOUNTAIN GUNS WERE EVER ASSEMBLED WITH MAGNAPORTED BARRELS AT THE FACTORY. I WOULD SAY THAT THE PRICE OF $650. REFLECTS THE DEVALUATION OF THE GUN IN A REALISTIC MANNER. 629s ARE NOT USUALLY SHOT MUCH SO IT SHOULD BE PRETTY SOUND MECHANICALLY. A LITTLE ELBOW GREASE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE COSMETIC ISSUES, AND YOU SHOULD HAVE A FINE SHOOTER…...

Many distributors bought guns from S&W, sent them to Mag-na-port, then sold them as new. It can be hard to document, especially if that distributor is no longer in business. A phone call to Lew Horton will confirm if it was one of their's. They'll also tell you if they had it Mag-na-ported.

Any chance you have the original box?

Gun is on consignment at LGS. I do not believe it has the box, but not sure. I do have a 625 MG with the original box.

Went back today and looked again. It does have the box with it and it does not appear to have been magnaported by a distributor, at least there is no marking on/in the box to show that it was. Based on this, and having too many .44's already I passed on it.

Can't say the same about the 642 Powerport they had in the case. My wife's birthday present.
