Hello there, I recently acquired a 629-4 with a 3” barrel and black rubber grips, this is my first S&W revolver, fairly unfamiliar with all the models and such. Trying to figure out what exactly I have. Have been doing some research, and having a hard time finding anything. Do not have the box or anything like that. Serial number is BRL 08XX
Let me know what other info might be helpful as well.
Thanks for any help in advance!

There were a few variations of the 3" M629

Here's a couple brochures showing an RSR special and one from the Stocking Dealer program. .....

If you call the factory (800-331-0852), hit the buttons that get you to S$W Customer Service, give them the s/n for your revolver, they will provide the Month & Year it shipped and also the product code, it may be one the the two in the brochures above, click on the pic and you'll see the product code.

Thanks!
Was able to get the product code from S&W, 130450 so according to the brochure images you posted, it’s the Backpacker model. But, mine does have a ported barrel though. S&W also was able to tell me was March of 1994.
Forgot to mention, there’s the number 133 etched in it as well (see picture).

Got the revolver and everything in the picture from original post, for $1000 (that’s 500 rds sjhp & 80rds flat nose), thinking got a good deal? Looks to be in pretty darn good shape, and the seller said it wasn’t hardly shot, carried in the woods occasionally.

What’s a revolver like this worth? Don’t really plan on selling it, just curious.

Welcome to the forum and congrats. I think you did very well on the purchase, probably cleared the ammo for little of nothing. In other words, the gun alone could fetch $1000 being it's a -4 (popular version) and 3".
To me, ported handguns aren't my thing but you may like them?
Someone else more experienced than me will be along to share their thoughts.

Nice gun, and welcome to the forum. I did not look closely enough to see if it is ported, but if it is, and you are shooting under an enclosed roof at a range, keep in mind the muzzle blast will no doubt be quite substantial. You may see people move away from you:D

Glad to hear y’all think the same I was thinking, about getting a good deal on it. Wasn’t anything I was necessarily in the market for, opportunity just kind of fell in my lap. But has me super interested in it now, and figuring out exactly what it is, ha!

Being the product code makes it a Backpacker model, but has a ported barrel, and the hogue grips with the silver S&W medallions, would that likely make it a custom order, or are those just some variations to the Backpacker model?

Sorry for all the questions, just a total noob to revolvers, let alone this beautiful thing. Appreciate all the help!
