The new style thumbpiece showed up on the 629-4 in late '96. This may help to date your gun. At any rate, I consider the 629-4 to be the best rendition. I have one 6 and 1/2" Classic that locks up like the proverbial bank vault and is very accurate. Smith was using CNC mills to do their cylinders in the mid-90's and the -4's have .429 cylinder throats. I always have my eye out for a minty 5" Classic. You did well at that price as long as the gun is mechanically sound. Small scratches are easily buffed out.
