629-6, 2 1/2 inch Fixed Sight: Questions: Updated with Photos

I have a line on a model 629-6 (with the lock) with a 2 1/2 inch barrel. I have not seen it yet, but it is supposed to be ANIB. The asking price is $1000 but may be negotiable.

I have been able to find information on the 629-5, Camfour gun (I have actually held one of these but it was not for sale), but little info on this one. I have heard that it was a limited production run.

Questions:
Is this also a Camfour gun?
When was it produced?
How many were made?
Is $1000 a fair price for the gun?
Any other information on this gun.

There are very few of the short barreled AND fixed sight 44 S&W magnums in this world. Big bore snubbies are bringing good money and I would venture to say that even a lock version is probably worth that assuming good mechanical condition and finish.

I own on of the ~300 or so 629-5's and it isn't for sale for twice that amount (maybe more).

If the lock doesn't bother you I'd try and get it down a bit - if it does I wouldn't go any farther with it unless he comes way off. I really don't like the lock and it would have to be a too good to be true price for me to consider it; now that is a personal opinion.
 
Thanks for the opinions on the price.

I am more interested to see if anyone knows anything about this run of guns. Specifically the number of guns produced and any other pertinent information.

As SAFireman said you'd be looking at 3x that price for the -5 version and mines not for sale either. The -6 is just as rare (but not as desirable) and easily worth 1k. You can always offer less but IMO you're getting a good price already for a rare gun (200 made for Camfour in 2001 IIRC), lock or no.

One thing to consider it S&W could put this gun back into production at any time. The no-lock guns are like van Gogh paintings. They ain't making any more. What there is, is all there will ever be. That one reason no-lock guns will always go for more.

The -5 guns I've seen all had CDT s/n prefixes and a product code of 103839. Ship dates were in November of 1999. I've never seen the -6 version but it's likely (not certain) the -6 guns would have a similar product code but changed a little: 163839.

If you get this gun you're gonna hafta post some pics and share the box label info. And, since no thread is complete without a picture.........

I don't think they grow rice in France. Though, that does look like what they're doing, don't it. I think it was probably a wheat field. Turns out that painting isn't even by van Gogh :eek:. It was painted in his style by someone else. Shows how rare the real thing is. Even the internet images are hard to come by :p.
 
I won the auction but have not, as yet, been able to contact the seller. (I am not concerned as the seller has been selling for 16 years and has a 100% positive feedback). Will come in less than $1K with shipping and FFL fees.

It was interesting as the photos were for the Camfour 629-6, but the description was for the Performance Center gun which I believe was made later. Looking at the photos from this and his other auctions I believe they are of the actual gun and are not stock photos from another source.

Post number 29 from the thread below shows both of the Model 629-6s. The top is the Performance Center and the bottom is the Camfour. The photos of the gun I won are of the Camfour.

I have found a few posts about the Camfour guns from 2009 so I assume they pre-date 2009.

I have a Lew Horton Carry Comp and since they have been selling so high I will probably replace the Carry Comp with the 629-6 as my every day carry.

It will be most probably be the end of next week before I have it in hand, but will post photos of it then, along with photos of the Carry Comp.

I am still searching for information about the gun.

I have a 3' 629-6 PC "Carry Comp" SN NMCO150. The factory letter said 288 were made. I hunt bear and take it with me into the north woods of the USA as backup. It shoots well but the trigger is not as nice as my 29-2. I can't take it to Canada.

If I HAD to I'd take that one...:D What a snag. A coupla hours and a coupla brews with some Mother's and that will be good to go. A fixed sight 629 snubby is always on my gotta have list. Congrats!!
 
If I'd seen one like it in person (versus internet) then US$1000 would not been a big hindrance to making it part of the collection! Would be a fun shooter with mid-power lead bulleted .44 loads.
 
Update

I went to the range and qualified with the 629-6 today. I was shooting 200 grain Gold Dot JHP bullets and it was amazing. Very accurate and very little recoil. It was the first time that I shot it and threw a couple out at 25 yards prone, but still shot in the mid 80's. I expect my score to increase with familiarity with the gun.
 
I have one of each lock and no lock. Both were camfor less lock were made than no lock. I would gladly pay $1000!!!!
 
Good find there pard. As far as price is concerned.... only you can judge if it is worth it to you. Now shoot the stuff'ns out of it and enjoy.

My cousin has one of these, unfired in the box. I've been trying to talk him out of it, but no luck yet.

I find this particular gun interesting as to to how the top rear of the frame is done. My 629-6 and 629-3 Lew Horton's are done differently. They look like a traditional M&P. The one above looks like the newer 357 fixed sight guns.
 
I don't know about the fixed sight feature. The 3 1/2 inch 629 that is my avatar was $800. Thought that was a good price with 400 round to boot.
1k seems kinda high to me.

Really? A little more of a point instead of rounded off it looks like.

This 629-5 is the newest S&W I own...from year 2000.

Owned one for a couple of years. Not a pleasant gun to shoot. I started to thin my collection 2-3 years ago, and all the .44 Magnum snubs were first to go. I do believe I sold mine in 2012 for $1200.
Gun is more novelty than versatile. Those big ports on muzzle do nothing to help with shooting, blindingly bright if in the dark when fired.
Other than making some good money when I sold it, I have nothing good to say about such critter.
