629-6 PC 44 Magnum Hunter PLUS

I must be livin' right. I spotted this jewel on GB a coupla weeks ago hiding amongst the usual 629 PC offerings. I had been eyeing it's cousin, a SS finish two tone Hunter PLUS but the seller apparently wants a small fortune for it. I was aware that the SS finish gun existed and hard to find but wasn't willing to come off the hip for that one. I'd never seen or heard of this version of that gun in the black & SS two tone before. Google was no help. I'm thinking..must be fairly rare. Hmmmm. I waited til the last 20 minutes on the auction, threw the minimum bid on it, no other takers, so now it's in my safe!! The gun was spotless (obviously fired, no biggie), came with the original aluminum PC case, papers & fired case & a Burris 2x handgun scope.
I mounted the scope & headed to the range with 200 rds to see how it performed. I wasn't real happy with this particular scope & was getting decent groups but nothing to write home about. I contacted Phillip to score a Raptor mount & put a Burris FF3 red dot on it. I've had good luck with this set up in the past (see Competitive Shooting section) so I'll give this a test drive in the morning.
If anyone out there knows anything about this particular gun, I'd sure like to hear from ya. I'm thinking it may be an RSR Dist gun but that's just a shot in the dark.

WOW, that is a fine looking revolver.

I think the silver colored FF mount is a fine feature addition to the other silver colored bits.

I seriously dig that one. Love the two tone style. How did it feel compared to the compensated hunter & hunter? This one looks like it would be a peach to shoot for extended sessions. Great find & I love the PC aluminum case, it's a major bonus if you ask me. I love the one that came with my compensated hunter.

Thanks Cory. I'm not one to put a gun on a scale but it feels about the same in hand as my other PC 44s. Not too heavy, but enough along with the ports to manage recoil well. I feel this one will be a very nice addition to the family!

When shooting your various 44's at distance, do you prefer the tradition scopes or the red dots? I can see advantages & drawbacks to both. I'm leaning towards scope for my purchase.

Cory. I've been leaning more towards the red dots (Burris FF3) than the scopes. Scopes are great & make for very accurate shooting but for some reason I've had better luck with the dot. It may be the weight factor or looking through the tube that messes with me, I dunno. I just got home from the range dialing in the new FF3 and I believe I've got another keeper! These are three of my better targets (I'm not going to post the bad ones!!) Freestanding at 25 yards. I'm happy.

6"Bbl, 6 shot Hand Ejector, inertial Picatinny/
Weaver barrel rail for Scope Mounting, with
trapezoidal cut barrel ports.

Haven't shot her in a couple months but in the
shooting rotation with all my other S&W's. I'll
take her out next week.

She is very accurate with .431 dia, 240gr Lead SWC/
Alliant Unique powder/CCI LP primer/Remington,
Winchester, Star Line cartridges/running about 800
feet per second.

Thank for sharing target pictures. I like your idea
of the Dot sight setup.

Other powders that work well also are; Red Dot,
Bullseye, and American Select. Also, Win296 with
Hornady 240gr XTP Jacketed bullet (about 1200fps).

Esme is a looker for sure. I usually load for around 950 fps using .430 lead swc. I bought 1000 rds of the Missouri Powdercoated swc to see how they performed. I was pleased. It sure makes for easier cleanup but I still have several thousand regular ol swc waiting to be loaded. Makes for some serious dirty pics! Thanks for the powder recommendations. I may have to give them a try. I've been really happy with the CFE-P. Meters very well and can be loaded from mild to wild.

Darn good shooting off-hand at 25 yards.

I also shoot better off-hand with the dot vs. scope. When I shoot with a scope I think I am trying too hard to get a perfect cross-hair centered shot.

That may be it too. For me me, the red dot comes more natural. I've pulled off some really good shots with scopes but am more consistent with the dot.
