Hello everyone, new old guy here first post, I have something strange here was wondering if anyone else has run into this as well?
I bought a S&W model 626-6 classic from a private seller who bought it from cabellas in 2017 gun is in 99% condition. He shot a box thru her. Everything says it is a 626, box, bbl, paperwork, I even called S&W and the serial number matches a 44 cal.
The guy bought it new and I have no reason to doubt him the problem is it is stamped 627-5 on the yoke with the correct serial number.
S&W sent me a return box and invoice.

Should I return or does it add value to have something that they messed up on.
Regards, John

Not an expert by any means but I've seen where others have had miss marked revolvers. Hasn't hurt anything that I know of as long as you know what you actually have. Others may be by who are much smarter than I am.

Thank for your service. Yea I don't know if it actually hurts the value or helps, probably not going to hang on to it anyway.

It's seems like 627-5 is only a light stamping away from being a 629-6. I'm guessing if you look closely the 7 and 5 will look like they were on their way to be 9 and 6 with a deeper stamping.

appears to have the interchangeable front sight {DX style} NICE!

Send it back and have it stamped properly. Nothing of extra value here. There have been lots of mis-stamped guns and we can only surmise an already stamped frame got mixed in with other frames designated for a different caliber.

If you DO want to shoot it you better hang on to it tight! Nice gun, IMO. I just bought a 629-6, born in July 2016. My first .44 Magnum and I love it...so far! The .44 Specials were okay to shoot but the .44 Magnums kicked my lame-### butt! It's a keeper.

If its ops ok I wouldn't fool with sending back...S&W Smiths all have prehensile tails sticking out...the old timer's their long gone...they were Masters.

I guess since it's already gone through the transfer process at least once, then the incorrect marking wouldn't throw a wrench into the transfer process? Or, perhaps the next buyer, if you were to sell it, wouldn't whine about it being misrepresented or something? I suppose twodog max's advice sounds pretty good to me as long as it's all legal.

Thanks for the advice, I was going to send it in but after careful consideration I think I will keep it and just shoot it it shoots great maybe put some new grips on it thanks again.

That could be a 629 barrel on a 627 frame. So what?

A 627 is an 8 shot gun. A 629 is a 6 shot gun. The chambers on 8 shot guns are .030 further from the centerline than the chambers on 8 shot guns. If that is a 627 frame, the centerline of the barrel is .030 above the centerline of the top chamber in the cylinder. You might get away with shooting it for a while, but I wouldn't do it. Sounds like a good way to blow yourself up.

It may also be a 629 frame mismarked as a 627 frame. In that case, it would be OK to shoot it. I would want to know which is what before shooting 44 Magnums that may have to distort .030 to go down the barrel.
