629 classic problem

Hey I just got a 629 Classic with a 4" barrel,but you can not pull the trigger or pull the hammer back without pulling the cylinder release back towards you all at the same time,also when you use the cylinder release to open the cylinder it kind of clicks when you push it forward. I took it to a gun shop but after messing with it for two weeks he can't figure it out,said to send it to S&W....he also compared it to another 629 that he had and he said it all looks fine???Was wondering if anyone had any ideas...Thanks Robert

If you must pull back the cylinder stop all the time, to cycle the action, the center pin inside the cylinder is stuck or the spring is missing.
That's my guess.

Well that's what we thought to,but the center pin works freely,it sticks out about a 1/16 or so.....

Does it have the lock or is it a pre lock 629.

The yoke may be out of alignment, not letting the center pin contact the bolt. Does the cylinder spin freely?

My 629 Classic center pin protrudes approximately 0.10 inch (a bit longer than 1/16"). Perhaps there is a bit of contamination preventing the pin from fully protruding.

There is a spring loaded pin in the front end of the

cutout for the ejector rod. Is it present and will it move front to back if pushed. This applys rear ward preasure on the center pin.

I had a 29 that had similar symptoms. I oiled the pin and worked it in and out with the tip of a screwdriver until it moved freely. That soved the problem for me.

Yeah it is a prelock, cylinder does spin freely,taking it to a gunsmith today will keep you all posted...Thanks for the help...

I would suggest taking it apart and checking where the thumb latch and it's slot ( Inside and Outside ),To see if there is any crap in there and also check the plunger and it's spring to see if it moves freely on it's own.

If the cylinder release (and bolt) are forward, the hammer is blocked by the bolt and can't be cocked. The bolt may be broken (it happens, you have to remove it and check it) or the center pin isn't pushing the bolt back when the cylinder is closed. Not too many options. A broken bolt sounds probable.

Well figured it out,the center pin was mushroomed on the front end and wasn't letting the pin slide in all the way,filed the end and all is good now...thanks guys....Happy Holidays
