629 concealed

I didn't want to resurect old threads, but I did want to talk about carrying my 4" 629 concealed. I have to admit, that when I first started carrying it, it felt very conspicous, but since I've become accustomed to it's presence, It's become a non issue. I ordered one of Lobo gunleather's pancake holsters and it rides up tight and high and I've very happy with it. I keep it loaded with Hornady .44 spec SD rounds when out in the general public and keep the magnum loads for the woods/range.
one concern I have though is "noticibility." even though I'm always wearing loose fitting jackets/shirts, I've often wondered if it's more noticible to the public than it feels to me.
since Mi has no laws against open carry, I've even contemplated this option for the warmer weather when I'm head to and from the woods.

I carried a longer barrel 29 in a Bianchi X15 holster for quite a while.
I wore a short, wool jacket at work as part of the 'uniform' Shoulder holster carry was really the only options for a large gun.

had to google both holsters actually Like 'em both too. may have to look at getting one.

I do know that I need something more than my pancake. it interfere with my pack when I'm hiking but for out and about in town it's alright.

I have a 4" 629 mountain gun that I sometimes carry concealed in a Kramer IWB #2 horsehide holster with the matching double horsehide belt. This combo works great for me for my 629, and doesn't print at all with a polo shirt or long sleeve button down shirt. T shirts don't work so well though, and we don't wear jackets much where I live . I have Crimson Trace laser grips on it and it's my favorite revolver now.

My work takes me out in the woods once or twice a week, and this is what I carry. The barrel was trimmed to 2.75". I carry in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake, and it carries a lot better than I thought it would. It's underneath a shirt and Carhart bibs, though.

I packed it around town once, in place of my Detective Special, just out of curiosity. I was surprised, I barely noticed the difference, and I'm positive no one else was aware I was carrying something different!

I was surprised how easy it was to carry IWB. Originally the holster was going to be a sort of novelty for carry once in a while in winter, when camping, which is about 2 weeks here. But it worked out so well that I use it a lot more. Oddly, when I bought the holster, I ordered that same model holster for a Sig 229 also, and it didn't work well for me at all, the gun always felt top heavy and tilted outward. I ended up selling that one. But the revolver version really keeps the gun tucked in tight to the body and easy to conceal, at least in my particular case.

To solve the problem of the backpack interference and accessibility but not exactly CC I got the Guides Choice chest holster. No backpack shoulder strap or hip belt interference. This chest holster offers many carry options and I was suprised how concealed you can carry with this holster under a camo coat or sweatshirt even with a 5 inch barrel 629 and a shorter barrel would be even more concealable. Fantastic quality workmanship and 5 star quality leather. Love this set up for outdoors carry of my 629 5inch.

It has been quite warm without significant snowfall since January so the bears are starting to stir. This thread reminds me that I need to bust out the 629PC 2 5/8" for outings right about this time. The griz are waking up and searching out easy meals!

The concealability factor is sort of determined, more or less, by your body type. A larger type N-frame may be problematic for someone with a 150 lbs frame, but a non-issue for a 200 lbs+ guy.

I find carrying larger framed revolvers easier when using a high-riding vertical pancake style holster.

I've been toting 4" n frames unnoticed for years. Although I've replaced the 629 with a 329 for strictly a cc'ing gun. Lots of good hide benders around and a lot of them are members here. Do some serious internet serching and you'll find something that catches your eye. I've had good luck with a simply rugged rig and a recently purchased rig from el passo.

I started carrying my 3" 629 in a SR sourdough just after this last Christmas. Untucked button down, SR real mans belt, their sourdough and you're good to go.

Try Hornady 240 gr XTP jacketed hp with IMR 4227 for a carry load. The 629 3" in a SR sourdough works for me.

Do any of you have recommendations on carry ammo other than hornady 44 special? That's all I could find at my local cabelas and bass pro.

I load Speer 200 gr. Gold Dots, with enough Blue Dot for about 900 fps, for general purpose.

I also load 200 gr. Hard Cast DEWC, with enough 800-X for about 800 fps. I actually load that to turn my Contender into a target pistol, but it shoots great in the SRH. Kicks like a .38 Special!

I carry Corbon 180 gr at 1200 fps for self defense with speedloaders or an ammo wallet with Federal 240 gr and Hornady 300 gr. and a few snake shot cartridges too.
Sometimes I keep 2 rounds of each loaded so I can dial in what I think I need.
I've had the Corbon for about 20 years, I don't think they make that "urban defense" load anymore. They might have a 165 gr version now.

You can see in the (amateur) pic how tightly the Kramer IWB holster holds the 629 to the body.

I was very surprised to hear MI has no problem with open carry--I always had the idea MI was very restrictive, but I can't say exactly why I felt that way.

In any case, I know when I first began carrying concealed I was a bit nervous and very self-concious--always worried I'd bend down or reach up while at Home Depot or something and freak everyone out. It took a while to get comfortable, but I don't worry it anymore and am not too concerned about the end of the holster maybe showing once in a while.

While it doesn't bother me in the least to see other folks carrying open, it's not for me. I don't want the attention and don't want what I see as the added risk of attracting a nut case that either wants to make a comment and start a verbal confrontation, or who outright wants to take the weapon. That's regarding urban carry though; out in the woods is to me something quite different.

Here, it's 'just' black bear. While I've never seen one pissed off, my impression is they're fairly cute and cuddly, and I'm thinking they take one look at the 10mm I normally carry and scurry away in awestruck panic.
