I have a 1 year old 629 that has seen less than 50 rounds. I had it stop functioning today. The cylinder will not turn when I cock the hammer or pull the trigger for double action. The gun still shoots if I open the cylinder and manually advance it.

Given that it's under warranty, sounds like I get my first experience with S&W customer service.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Thanks,
QD

Most likely a broken hand or hand spring. It could also be a problem with the ratchets on the extractor. The hand is the most likely problem from your description. An easy fix that the factory will take care of.

QD3,
there are several possibilities as to what the problem could be. to me the short and best answer to you is to call
s&w, get a return procedure set up, and let your warantee work for you. You will not be out any money, and it will be returned to you in proper working order.

Had a similar experience with a 329PD. Turned out it was the torsion hand spring. Some how it had worked itself loose -- maybe it wasn't installed correctly to begin with. I reinstalled the spring and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

If you feel comfortable removing the side plate and working on your 629, here's a youtube video on installation of the torsion hand spring.

I was thinking your ejector rod came loose and needed tightened. Then I read the rest of your post lol. Sorry.

Did the flag deploy on you?

If by flag, you mean that awful lock, I think no. It would have blocked the trigger. I will still test.

I will check the ejector rod.

I think it will go off to S&W regardless. I'm not quite comfortable taking off the side plate. In time, I will try that out.

Even if it's not totally finacitonal, it still stacks billets right on top of each other.
