My 629 has the ugly fiber optic front sight on it. Can I change it out for the regular ramped front sight?

Is this the hole you are talking about? Does it just drive out with a brass punch? Where can I get the sights?

Midway USA has some. Let me know how it goes as I have been wanting to switch out my partridge sight for one with a white dot or a ramped red sight.

Call Smith & Wesson and tell them what you have and what you want. I replaced the front and rear sights on my 629 Mountain Gun for about $35. I went from plain sights to a white outline rear and a red ramp front. They were very helpful

If the front sight is "pinned on" the new sight will not have a hole for the pin. Search the gunsmithing area for instructions. By chance is your 629 a classic? If you look at the muzzle and there is a small hole above the bore you do not need tools to remove the sight.

I am surprized nobody previous to me pick up on the fact that your 629 has the interchangeable front sight. The clue that confirms that you have the interchangeable front sight is the position of that pin, it's biased towards the front of the barrel and that pin is what the front of the dovetail base is what holds the sight in place with a spring applying the pressure.

DO NOT drive that pin out, if you do you'll regret it. Instead, all you have to do is push the sight straight toward the rear of the gun against the spring and once it's all the way back, tip the front up and out of the slot. Once you've figured out how easy it is to change the sight on the models that feature this type of mount, you'll then want to look at S&W's site under the parts/sights category, they have a good selection of different sights you can change out at will.

BTW, if you haven't picked up on it yet, I am a HUGE fan of this system. Frankly, I wish that S&W offered this type of mount on all their revolvers because it makes it so simple to change the front sight and slip in a blade better suited to a specific task.

It is a classic. It doesn't have a pin in the muzzle to push in.

Can you show us a pic of the muzzle?
Judging from the location of the pin, you may just need to push the sight towards the rear, lift up the front and remove, as scooter123 indicates above.
The Classic models had the replaceable front sights, so you may not need any gunsmithing at all.

I pushed on the site and it didn't move. I pushed the pin out with a paperclip and the site still wouldn't come out. What am I doing wrong?

When you look at the end of the barrel is there a little hole above the big one that is the bore? If so it is a removal sight, if not the sight is just in the slot tight and may need a little help to get it out. NOTE: If the little hole is there push forward and up on the sight.

Below are some very low resolution pictures of removing the front blade from a 629 Classic. It is a ten second procedure. The pictures are poor but I think you will get the idea....

I'm sorry, guess I should have remembered to tell you to push forward from the end of the barrel facing you.
