I have decided to buy a 629 Mountain Gun and am curious what would be a good price. I found a gently used Cabella's Outfitter series for $700. The action is smooth as silk but it has the infamous lock. I know they will do a 10% off for military over 4th of July which will pretty much pay the tax. New is $900 at Cabella's. Any advice?

I would stay away from any gun that had a private retailers name on it or one that was made and distributed only to the big box chain stores, my advice is to get a regular production gun , unless its something very special you will loose way more money at trading or selling time

If you like it, Buy It. I have two "lock" production revolvers, a 625 5" and a 625 mountain gun. I like both a lot. If you are buying the 629 to shoot and enjoy the "outfitter" name will not affect it. It will be a long time before current or recent production guns achieve "collectable status" so value at sell or trade time will always be half what it is worth or worse. A LGS will tell you the "name" depresses the value; but will tout it as a "rare" gun when he resells it. JMHO

I paid less than that for my "like new" used 629MG with out the lock, good deals are out there but you just have to be patient and have the cash when the gun popps up. Also be careful how many times the lock is talked about or the lock police will come along and close your thread:rolleyes:

If you want it buy it. Don't worry about the resell value, lock or the Cabela's name either. Get out there and start shooting it. Of course if you are going to resell or looking for an investment this may not be the best gun to buy.

I bought this 629 Mountain Revolver last July for $580. Not NIB by any means but a nice outdoor carry piece.

Thank you all for your comments. Just looking for a good 629 Mountain Gun for field carry gun in good shape. Not interested in collector value or financial "investment". Will keep looking for a deal.

If YOU like the 629, buy it. We are not the ones who drop the $$$$$$.
If you intend to carry it as a field gun, the collector value will be only to you. Lock or no lock, it will outlast all of us.

Lock is a non-issue

You can go in, pull all the internals of the lock out, put the plug in, and only S&W people would think to look for the plug. Glue the flag back in place to keep all the debris out of your revolver and rock on.

If it's a 629 Mountain Gun that you want, get it. A few bucks is soon forgotten.

The 629 MG is such a favorite of mine that I bought a spare, just in case.

Mountain Gun

Colbad,
I have a 629-2 Mountain Revolver and a 629-5 Mountain Gun w/the roll marked grizzly bear head on right side plate. They are my go to N frames. If you like the Cabelas gun and are happy with price buy it and enjoy it!

IF I could have only one revolver it wuld be a 4" S&W 44 Mag, and the Mountain Gun would be a great choice. The wife nd I carry them when in the field, and I have carried a 4" 44 Mag as a Duty gun both on and off duty starting in 1976. Even today I still carry one for CHL on a regular basis.

I would prefer to have one without the lock, but I did buy a 325 NG with the lock and simply removed it.

It functions 100%. I keep it under my pillow every night.

I personally would never carry any S&W with a lock, no any other gun. I would simply remove it.

I am not familiar with the Cabela's model but if it is basically the same as any other 629 Mountain Gun, the discounted price seems fair. I agree that the lock wouldn't worry me on a gun I planned to just use. I would disable it if it got to worrying me.

I am not the biggest fan of the Mountain Gun pattern for Magnums (and of 4-inch 44 Magnums in general), but the Mountain Guns are useful guns - just harder to shoot accurately than the standard models. If you get a chance to shoot both the Mountain Gun and the standard model side by side, do it. A half-box of 44 Magnums with both guns will tell you a lot.

My own choice in a lightweight model is the 44 Special. The Model 24/624 is essentially the same gun as the Mountain Gun, but without the blackpowder-chamfered cylinder and with a square-butt frame instead. I don't like shooting 44 Special in magnum-chambered guns, so that model is right up my alley. It puts out about all the power I can easily handle in that type of revolver. For the magnum round, I think I prefer the standard gun, in spite of the weight.

I bought my Mountain Gun while in route to Yousemite National Park for some hiking and rock climbing. We were up close and personal with 5 bears during the trip! All were well behaved and we gave them plenty of room. However, I was quite happy to have my new Mountain Gun strapped to my side just in case!
