Local guy has a 629 no dash with 6" barrel but has aftermarket rubber grips (?). His pictures are crappy, but he says it looks almost brand new (we'll see).

He was asking $650. I told him I'd pay $600 cash if it is in as good a condition as he described. He agreed. No box or docs.

Thoughts?

UPDATED 11/18/2011 w/ Pics....

Finally replaced rubber grips with targets. Pretty sure they are not correct?? I think they should have the "football" style cut-outs and not the speedloader cut-outs. But I got a great deal on these until I can find a nice "correct" set.

Pictures would help. But if it is good shape, I'd take it. You can always find N frame grips.

I agree with jj!
If it's in good condition then buy it.
Someone on here can sell you some grips for it later.
$600 is a fair price.

He did send me a picture, but it is REALLY bad. I can basically tell that it is a silver looking revolver with some type of black grips. It never ceases to amaze me the crappy pictures some people use when they are trying to sell something. Oh well, if he is trying to hide something I will find out tomorrow. If I bring it home, I'll take some good pictures and post them here!

Thanks for the replies!!

That's a fair price. I paid $600 about 18 months ago for a Model 629. It had the original stocks but no box, etc. Mine shoots like a dream. You'll enjoy it.

Thanks Dennis! meeting the guy at noon. If she looks good, she's mine!!:D:cool:

I assume you're referring to the gun, right :D ?! Just kidding of course - good luck!

Funny you said that! I almost added "The gun, not his wife" to that post, but decided not to.

Anyway, his wife didn't show up, but I brought the 629 home instead. Needs a good "bath", and the stocks definitely need to be changed, but it is real nice! I'll post up some pics after I clean her (the gun...PA Reb!:D) up!!

The rest of the story!

Hey Mark
If your serial number starts with #N629xxx you made a real steal! ? ! ? Production of the 629s began in 1979 with the 6" barrel length. These N serial prefix guns that are pinned and recessed have become somewhat of a collectors item. We want pics? ! ?

Updated OP with pictures. I gotta get a new camera that will make up for my crappy picture taking skills!!

You did well as that's a nice 629 no dash at a very good price

Finally took the 629 out for a "range-date". This is my first .44 Magnum, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I bought some Georgia Arms 240gr FMJ (new brass) at a recent gun show. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed shooting it! I am a terrible target shooter, so I wasn't expecting any real precision placement results. However, I set up a 8.75" paper plate at 25 yards and was able to hit the plate 17 out of the first 18 rounds shot using a shooting bench. Standing and without support I was able to hit the plate 9 times out of the next 12 shots (the other 3 were within 2-3 inches of the plates edge). For me this was AMAZING results.

Very happy with my "new" 629!!

I have a 6" 629 that is pinned and recessed, with the original target grips what are they worth these days?

I'd say anything south of $650 - $700 is a good deal. I paid $600 for mine but had to buy replacement grips.

Those grips look good to me.

A 6" S&W 44 Mag is a great handgun to have.
