629 No Dash help

Hello all,
I am new here and very new to wheel guns, and want to ask for some informative help

I have the opportunity to trade a Sig p220 for a 629 no dash. (not even sure what that means but from what I have read I think that means its older.)

so my question to folk here is what should I look for to make sure I am getting a good 629.

I have always wanted to get a SW wheel gun but did not have the cash and now the opportunity has come up to where I can just trade but don't want to get snookered. I have no real knowledge when it comes to the 629 or any SW wheel gun.

so any help is very very appreciated.

Being a 629 "No Dash" owner myself, the key things to look for include:

- Timing (Does the cylinder lock into place before the hammer falls, both SA and DA?)

- Lock-up (In the firing position (hammer down, trigger back), how much rotational play is present?)

- End-shake (in the firing position, how much can you move the cylinder back and forth?)

- Cylinder gap (in the firing position, what is the maximum space between the front of the cylinder and the back of the barrel)

How is the finish on the gun your are looking at (scratches, etc)? What barrel length?

Some of these early 629's have seen just a box or two of shells their whole lives, while others got pounded with thousands of hot reloads.

What do you want the gun for? A Sig P220 is easier to conceal than a N frame S&W, and cheaper to feed. N frame gunleather is rather pricey too. If your primary need is a CCW, the Sig would be the better choice.

I am looking for a shooter, neither would be for CCW I cary a 9mm sccy or a wather ppks most days and have a kaltec 32 as backup.

and I am dealing with someone on ODT, is there something I should know?? any info would be good.
its a 5.6 barrel and it does have scrathes per the pic that were sent. I have not seen it in person.

you are making me second guess geeting the 629 now that you say it will be much more to feed and issue with ODT

I like to buy and shoot for a time and then when something comes up I will sell or trade to get the next thing I want to try,
I feel like maybe per your comments this is not the way I should go this time?

If measured correctly it's what S&W calls a 6 inch and you measure from the end of the barrel to the front of the cylinder. Measured that way they are usually about 1/8 inch short of 6 inches.

44Magnum and 44 Special ammo is usually costs more than 45 ACP and is harder to find currently. The no dash is a great revolver and if in good shape has some collector value as they were made for a short time before the 629-1 came out. The (-) dash numbers after the model number are engineering changes made by S&W.

The 629 no dash, IMO is a very desirable firearm. Autos are not quite a dime a dozen, they all cost more than that.
But there are plenty of autos here now and more still coming down the pike. When I go to Gunshows, that's about all I see.
The desirable Smith revolvers and that certainly includes the 629, will most likely continue to increase in value.

Depending on your P220s condition and such, the 629 may be worth anywhere from a little to a lot more (several hundred dollars) than your Sig. I have no experience with the forum you mention, but if it offers buyer/seller feedback that is often a good indication of how your trader operates. Going through an FFL on both ends may be a good idea also.
