I have a trade in the works for a model 637-2. I haven't held it yet, but have a picture. I I have a question about the turn line on this revolver. I have read the entire thread titled "Model 29 turn line". In the picture I have of the 637-2, it looks like the turn line is "off", to me. What I mean by that is: the turn line looks like cylinder is dragging in two diferent spots, like maybe it isn't rotating exactly right? The owner says it's "almost new", and pictures can be deceiving. I'm a revolver newbie, and I'm trying to find out what to look for in used S&W revolvers (and yes, I've read the "revolver checklist"). Thanks! See attached:

You want to see the turn line perfectly perpendicular and centered on the leades/stop notches but an off-center line and/or one that's angled a bit may be considered acceptable nowadays when it comes to newer production S&Ws, I don't know.

Absolutely normal. What specifically was it you thought was "odd" about this?

And, a turn line has no correlation to how much the gun has been shot. If the prior owner played with it a lot it could have a well developed turn line and still be absolutely un-fired except for the three rounds from the factory.

Another factor is the fine bead blast or "vapor honed" finish. these matte finish guns develope a turn line much faster that a gun with a standard polished or brushed finish, it is inherent in the finish.

If you look closely, where the turn line is above and below the cyl notch, they look to be not lined up. The end of the turn line below the notch is slightly off to the left of turn line above the notch.

I think that's what the OP is asking about... lateral play in the cylinder as it rotates, so the turn line is not "tracking" straight??

If you look at other photos of cylinder turn lines, the lines within the leades will rarely be perfectly centered due to the geometry of the cuts, so you can ignore those short sections. I only took a quick glance at AT1984's photo and assumed I saw a crooked line but now that I look again, I see that's not the case. His does look fine and centered.

In this photo you can see what I'm referring to. It's a good turn line that enters the leade centered but then we see the line swing to the side through the leade (easier to see at the upper notch in photo) and then again re-centered beyond the notch. If this is what AT1984 is concerned about, it's normal.

Several of my j-frames appear to have slightly discontinuous turn lines. Note that the outer curvature of the cylinder stop does not match the curvature of the descending notches in the cylinder. Unless things are perfectly aligned, this will cause a slight "misalignment" that you might see.

But all of my j-frame shoot just fine. Timing is good. Unless you see some major wear in the notch wall sides I would not worry about it.

Look familiar? 1,192 rounds (1,193 if you count the factory round) and still going like new:

^^^That's exactly what I was talking about. I see it's not much to worry about, from the responses. I appreciate all the replies! Thanks again.
