I tried searching the forum for 638-2 and came up dry. I saw one in my LGS for $399. Can probably get out the door for $400. I realize this is a good price but don't know much about these revolvers. I have a stainless humpback in 357 for belt carry and love it. I am interested in the 638-2 for pocket carry. Anyone have any insight on this model? I love the fact it has no lock. Thanks in advance for any info.

When I do a search for 638-2, why does nothing come up? I know I have seen them discussed on this forum but can't find the old posts?

I have a M638-2 and carry it more than any of my other guns. I made an IWB holster for it and it carries real well with just about any shirt. I gave less for mine but that was a while back.

I have an older Model 38 that dates back to the mid 1960's that is a great pocket gun. It's as good as a J frame can get.

The 638 shines in ALL modes of carry: IWB, OWB, pocket. As a small-frame snub, there is nothing it does poorly within its limitations. Love mine, hope to find a 2nd to love.

I also was in the hunt for a 638-2 for quite some time. I love my 649 and wanted something just a little lighter for carry. I recently bought a 638-3. I normally would not have purchased the 638-3 (IL) but it was a deal too good to pass up.

Just my luck, right after I purchased the 638-3, I came across a 638-2 (no lock), LNIB condition, box, manual, etc.. These are rarer than hen's teeth so I bought it. It's in gun jail right now and I get it in 9 days. My plan it to carry & shoot my -3 and regulate my 638-2 to safe queen duties. I am a J frame fan so an extra J frame in the safe is all good :)

So just hang in there, they do pop up for sale from time to time. Just have your funds ready as you will be higher than a 638-3.

BUY IT SQUID

Pineappleshooter,

Buy it. You won't regret it. If you don't like it, you can sell it in a heartbeat on the Forum.

Thanks guys. I know the price is good, I just didn't know much about the newer 638's. I will get it tomorrow and it can join my Colt Cobra, Colt DS, 36, 442, and 649. Yep I like the snubbies but snubbyfan already took the name!

But you could become a "J-hound" like me! No initiation fee, no dues, no ritual incantations. A new J-frame weekly will do nicely to keep you in good standing. You already have the edge on me: two 638s to my one. Don't go the 'safe queen' route on the IL gun. Shoot and carry them both alternately. My opinion and it isn't humble.

pineappleshooter: Another cool handle!

Mostly carry the 442 with Crimson Trace boot grips. The other J's and D's are tricked out with stag grips and spend most of their time in the safe or on BBQ duty. Thanks for the compliment on the my handle. I can PM you if you want to know what it means - not for public consumption.
