Yes they made the 638 without the internal lock. They do turn up from time to time, have seen some on here occasionally. If you be patient and look around i'm sure you will locate one.

The Internal Lock System was introduced in 2002. I think most all revolvers had them by end of 2003. There is one on Gunbroker, 3 days left on the auction if you want to look at one.

I cannot answer your question about when the locks went on the M638, but I did have a lock model. It worked w/o any problems and was one of the best, most accurate J's I ever owned. Unfortunately I sold it to finance another purchase.

The model 38, is my favorite carry gun. I just made it a little better! :D
And if you cant find one without the lock, its easily enough disabled.

Though mine has the IL after slapping some Talos wood grips on it I am completely in love. It handles like a dream and still conceals well in my pocket.

On a related note does anyone know how long they made the -3 with the 2 1/2" barrels?

Proud to meet you to brother, I'm recently retired 33yrs was enough for me. Miss my brothers but thats about it. If I never see NYC again I won't miss it

Favorite Carry Gun

My 438 is my favorite carry gun, either in a shoulder holster, or OWB holster. I also occasionally carry a 649 which also uses either holster. Both have the internal lock, which remain unused, and have caused no problems.

Nice stocks on that 438, what are they?

438 Stocks

Those are magna grips in Micarta by Charles Spresser (Spresser Knife Works) with a Tyler T-Grip in bronze. I actually have an extra set of those grips with T-Grip (I bought 2 sets from a guy in Colorado on Armslist when I had the chance).

I searched for years for my 638 w/no lock, I wanted a lighter copy of my no lock 649 and found it one day at a local pawn shop.

I started a thread a while back about the Tyler T-grip I paid $299 for and this pre-lock M638 came with it.

I ran work for over 25yrs,[7WTC,citibank stadium P.A. bus term] Hard to turn it off. retirement was forced. Like humpity dumpity after his fall couldn't put me back together either
