I have a guy offering me a 639 from the 80's says its only seen 500 to 600 rounds and has been sitting in his safe.

Is $500 to much?

Picks of the package plus it will be a face to face deal!

All these hits and no one can answer my question.

Do you guys / gals think this is a good deal?

Im just getting back into the older Smith autos and im not up on the prices
Any help please!!!

I'd pay the 500... you don't see them around often. I love the fixed sites with round trigger guard.. best model IMHO.......

Buy, buy and buy...............

Buy the gun if you want it but recalling my time spent with the 39 and 59 models, I never liked them... and do not care to own another. Lots of progress has been made in autos since the 80's...

I recently paid 607 for a nickel 639 rated fine, so yea go for it. I love the 39s, 439s and 639s there great to shoot and 9mm ammo is cheap.

I doubt that your 639 was nickel since it's a stainless steel gun.

Ken158 did you kick any kittens today? Tell us all what your favorite gun is and we'll see if we approve.

That's what I was thinking.

Good move. That is an early 639 with the round trigger guard and fixed sights, they are in demand. People who have them don't usually sell them. I already have one but I would buy another at that price.

I sure don't see that many of them, at any price. If it is nice shape, I'd say you didn't get robbed - especially with the extra magazines.

I had to buy one just as a matter of curiosity because I never had the chance to fire one of the elusive and much-discussed steel-frame Model 39s. Like the difference between Commander and Combat Commander, the frame material does have a big effect on how the gun handles. I believe my 639 has adjustable sights - the only one I have ever seen with them, but I am sure they made many. I didn't see that my 639 shot any better than the 39s I have fired.

Have fun with the new gun! :)

Looks like a nice early one too !
Besides the rounded trigger guard simple rear site it was made prior to the ambi safety lever foolishness.

Nice 639. I.always thought it odd SW used the round trigger guard on the early 2nd gens the the large square then reversed the trend on 3rd gens. Started with square and evolved back to round..

My guess is they got alot of negative feedback on it..
Personally never liked the squared TG and was glad to see it go....

Well guys I picked it up, and its better looking in person than the pictures I posted. It was truly a safe queen!! !
