64 no dash

I am considering a model 64 no dash. It is not a local piece, so, I won't be able to inspect it as normally would. The seller says it's in "almost unfired" condition. He is asking $530 plus shipping and transfer.

These early 64s are new to me, so I'm not sure on pricing. I am posting a couple photos he sent me.

Any advice will be appreciated.

At first I thought, "that's a bit high," but then I saw the box, docs and tools. An almost-new-in-box example of an early Model 64 with the 4" tapered barrel is easily worth $530 in my opinion. Even with the costs associated with getting it home, you should still be under $600.

Personally, I'd be a "go" on this one if I didn't already have one in the safe.

I think about $400 would be closer to a good price... but someone out there will pay more. Just gotta find that guy. I’m old enough to remember what no lock S&W’s cost and how many are out there...

Go for it. IIRC, I paid $600 for mine, unfired, box, 6 or 7 years ago. It was a "grail" gun for me. Was also a time capsule: the lug holding the cylinder latch came loose under firing, just like it would do on other early stainless revolvers of the early 70s. "Your" gun has flat-edged stocks (proper term?) like the ones on my 67. My 64 has the rounded-edge service stocks.

Reminds me: gotta get it to the range, clear it's throat.

I've long lusted for a 64 with a four-inch standard barrel. I'd have been on it like a sixteen-year-old on a large pizza.

Still on the fence about the 64. It looks like a good deal, but I haven't done anything with it, yet.

This one is on my radar, too. It's local and the seller will take $650 otd.

A nickel 2.5" model 19-3 at $650 is a great buy. The model 64 price is not bad, but not in this league.

I know my Model 64 no-dash came with PC magnas, not the squared-bottom magnas as shown in your pictures. I think the stocks have been changed out on that gun, for whatever reason. Just my opinion...

I was going to say to tell him that stainless 19-3s aren’t worth as much as nickle ones and offer him $550, but I see he’s already come down quite a bit!

I agree with this post. My 64 no dash has the PC magnas which
number to the gun. I think $530 + is too high.

I agree with JP@AK; if you can get it for $575-$625, jump on it. I've been haggling on one just like it ( but with PC magnas) from a local S&W shooter/collector for a couple years. Excellent condition but no box or accessories like yours. I think we've finally come to an agreement at $475.00.

The only thing that is holding me back on the 64 is that it's not local and a can't get reliable feedback on the seller. If I go after either of these, it will probably be the 19, but we'll see.

Finding a k frame that combines condition with the right price has proven difficult.

There are many different models of K frames on Gun Broker in any
condition from poor to new. Also many sellers have thousands of
feedbacks. Prices vary but it is possible to get a great buy if you're
patient. Check them out if you haven't already.

That gun was local to me, so I went and bought it this morning.
They came down to $ 450 which I thought was a fair price .

Just remember -- in gun lingo, "almost unfired" is the equivalent of "a little bit pregnant"...

It's always more difficult to tell how much wear and usage a stainless gun has on it , but I will say this , At some point someone wiped it down with something and left a lot of hairline scratches. Also, someone painted the front sight with green paint. I ended up trading a heavy barrel 64-5 that a Georgia dept of corrections officer had crudely engraved his numbers into ,and a little bit of cash for it so overall I am happy with the deal .

Yes, the gun was in Decatur, I am in Huntsville, about a 35 minute drive. I am happy with it .

Muphydog, I do like that 19. It's about 45 minutes away. A friend gave me the lead on it and I haven't been able to go visit it yet.
