Hi Guys!

I found a 640-1 at a pawn shop by my house. I didn't have time to check it out thoroughly. but it looks to be in pretty good shape. They're asking $500 for it. I checked Gunbroker and that seems to be an ok price. I've got about $600 I been saving for either the new Cobra or the new 66 2.75". I guess my question is, a good deal or not?

Right tool for the job!

Many here, myself included, bought the 640-1 trade in guns from Centerfire for $329. I would tell the seller that as a bargaining tool.

In the pawn shop where I do business the guys would look you square in the eye and say, "You, too, should have bought one of those." Then they'd turn away and leave you to digest that little nugget.

Including FFL transfer, I am in my early M640-1 that same amount, & that was a while back. NO regrets what so ever. No MIM / No lock. Very smooth action, & accurate. REALLY a great little revolver.

The guys that got in on the Center Fire $329 (before fees & shipping) PD trade in's, got screamin' good deals, but I doubt anyone will be flippin' theirs - for anywhere NEAR their original purchase price.

The 640 is just a tad heavy for pocket carry (IMO anyway), but carries great concealed - in a minimalist pancake style OWB holster.

If the action checks out, I say grab it - before some one else does!

Picked up this 640-2 (.38) NYPD gun for a little over $500 online. Paid a premium because it is an oddball.

Incidentally, last fall I sold a regular 640-1 (no lock) with some carry wear (to the extent that is a thing on stainless) for $450 in a FTF transaction here in Charlotte.

Right before the Centerfire guns hit the market, I paid $450 for a pretty nice 640-1 and was happy with the price at the time.

Model 640-1 revolvers in good shape found for much less than $500 these days are not often seen. In fact, in my experience, those revolvers are not often seen for any price. I own the only two I've ever seen in person, which is the way I prefer to purchase a gun. I'm not saying there are not others around, but I've looked at an awful lot of revolvers in the past 60 years.

If it's in good shape and you like it (and FWIW, the 640 Centennials are my all time favorite J Frame!), then I say it's worth it. That would not keep me from laying down four Benjamins on the counter to see what might happen. They ain't making them like that any more either! I like guns that don't cost a lot, but the older models aren't found many places for chicken feed these days.

It's not a steal, but it would be worth it to me if I couldn't get it for less, and I'd sure try to do that. I'd even make my last offer for $500 out the door if that's the best I could do!

I paid $850 (Aussie dollars) new for my 640-1 so i would guess $500US is a good deal. BTW i have never seen another 640 (new or s/hand in Australia)

I saw 2 at the last gun show I went to a couple of weeks ago. I didn't look close at them because I had just bought 2 from Centerfire, but they both were priced at $550.

Summit Gunbroker is selling them for $399

Firearms, Guns, Rifles. Grain Valley, Missouri.

And what would the final in-your-hands tally be after tax, title, shipping, and transfer are added to that price from Summit? Not questioning this might be a good deal, but the final total would likely be fairly close to that 500 dollar bill by the time you can take possession of one of these. Maybe not, but for me, I sure like to be able to inspect the gun in person before laying down that cash. I've bought guns through the net, and I've only been scalded a couple times and mildly disappointed another time or two. Several other times I was very pleased. I only remember one time I paid for a revolver or semi auto handgun that I later regretted because of condition issues, and that was when I had very little knowledge or experience knowing what was important to check or how to check it. Needless to say, I bought some experience at that time. So it depends on what each of us is willing to risk for pretty close to the same money in the end.

Thanks for all the responses folks! Just to give y'all an update, I was able to negotiate the price down to $400, with tax added walked out the door with the no lock 640-1 for $433.

Took it to the range today and killed a silhouette target with about 50 head shots in distances from 3 to 7 yards. Sweet little gun! I see why y'all like them so much. I ran a cylinder of 158 grain .357's through it and that was fun!

It was pretty dirty when I got it, so I cleaned it up real good after the range. The gun came with the Uncle Mikes's combat grips on it, so I switched them out for a set of Super Rosewood bantams' for pocket carry in a Mika.

The trigger is pretty nice too. Heavy, but smooth. Easy to pull back and stage. I may leave this one alone. Now I'm back to carrying two j frames with the 640 and my 637-2 with the bobbed hammer spur!

Added some bright green fingernail polish to the front, with white underneath to make it pop. Blacked out the rear of the sight channel with a sharpie and I'm ready to go!

I call that, a SCORE!

On top of a great price, you got to do a hands on inspection first - which is a definite plus in my book.
